MTV First: 'Battleship' With Taylor Kitsch Begins Right Now!
Skype iOS apps hit v4.0: improved stability, minor UI tweaks in tow
Everyone's favorite VoIP service, Skype, has rolled out a fresh update to its iPhone / iPod Touch and iPad clients. First off, the Microsoft-owned outfit added a revamped login screen to both iOS applications, and now offers the ability to move your vid preview around the screen -- much like FaceTime does. To go along with the new pair of features, Skype's changelog also notes the app will now automatically restart after a sudden crash, while other undisclosed enhancements were made to improve the overall UI, stability and accessibility. Of note, Skype v4 requires folks to be running iOS 4.3 or later. So, those of you keeping that Cupertino OS current can hit either of the iTunes links below to get the goods, or grab it from the App Store on your device.

15-inch Series 7 Chronos with Ivy Bridge surfaces on Samsung's Canadian site
When it rains it pours. Hot on the heels of announcing that 17-inch Series 7 Chronos laptop it teased back at CES, Samsung is doing the predictable sensible thing and refreshing the 15-inch version with an Ivy Bridge processor as well. So far, we see it listed on Samsung's Canadian site with a 1GB NVIDIA GT640M GPU and a quad-core Core i7-3615QM CPU (remember that Intel hasn't announced its dual-core variants yet). Curiously, though, we don't actually see it for sale online anywhere, it's unclear how much it costs and that Ivy Bridge configuration isn't even listed as an option on the company's US site. We've emailed Samsung for clarification, but in the meantime you may as well consider this a placeholder -- and will yourself to hold off a little longer before pulling the trigger on a mid-sized laptop.
[Thanks, Hugo]

'Think Like A Man' Ends 'Hunger Games' Box-Office Streak
Zac Efron's 'The Lucky One' also beat out 'Games' over the weekend.

In the end, it wasn't any sort of dastardly villain who conquered the heroes of "The Hunger Games." No, the four-week box-office reign of the adaptation of the popular YA novel was ended by none other than Steve Harvey and Zac Efron, whose respective new movies performed quite impressively over the weekend.
"Think Like a Man" was #1 with a $33 million opening, boasting a higher per-screen average than any other movie with a nationwide release this year, save for "Games" and "Dr. Seuss the Lorax." With a story based on the lessons given in comedian Steve Harvey's self-help tome "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man," the film gave Screen Gems their second-best opening (behind "The Vow") and third #1 in 2012 so far.
Screen Gems only spent a reported $13 million making "Think Like a Man." Many industry watchers predicted an opening at least $10 million lower, more in line with the intake of the #2 movie at the box office this week, "The Lucky One." The Zac Efron-led tearjerker opened with $22.8 million. That's much higher than Efron's "Charlie St. Cloud" ($12.4 million) though somewhat less than "17 Again" ($23.7 million). It's the second-biggest opening for a movie based on a Nicholas Sparks book, behind "Dear John" ($30.5 million). Box Office Mojo noted that "The Lucky One" actually sold more tickets than "The Notebook" too, though it earned less actual cash.
"The Lucky One" was pretty unlucky with critics, however. Richard Roeper called it "well-acted schmaltz with some gaping plot holes." Eric D. Snider described "The Lucky One" as "exactly the kind of sappy hogwash that Efron's detractors think is the only thing he's capable of doing." The movie did receive a B+ CinemaScore from moviegoers who saw it, although 56 percent of them admitted that Efron was the main reason they went to see the film, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"The Hunger Games" was #3 with $14.5 million for a five-week total of $356.9 million. The first in a planned trilogy, "Games" now sits at #19 on the list of all-time box-office grosses, right between "Jurassic Park" ($357 million) and the third "Transformers" movie, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" ($352.3 million). "The Hunger Games" has made more than any "Twilight" movie and is ahead of every "Harry Potter" flick except "Deathly Hallows, Part 2," which made $381 million.
"Games" did manage to hold off one of the weekend's new films, "Chimpanzee," though the Disneynature film still managed the third-highest opening for a documentary ever. "Chimpanzee" was #4 with $10.2 million, placing it behind docs "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" ($29.5 million) and "Fahrenheit 9/11" ($23.9 million). "Chimpanzee" had a 77 percent "fresh" score on film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. "Walt Disney himself couldn't have scripted 'Chimpanzee' any better," wrote Newsday's Rafer Guzman. The Washington Post's Michael O'Sullivan wrote, "one wonders whether more than a few viewers won't want to take home a baby chimp."
The Farrelly brothers' take on "The Three Stooges" rounded out the top five with $9.2 million during its second weekend, bringing the comedy's total to $29.4 million.
"Titanic 3-D" continued to top the international box office, bringing its overseas total to $225.7 million. "Battleship" has made $129.6 million abroad.
Next weekend's new films include "The Raven," starring John Cusack as a fictionalized version of Edgar Allan Poe; Jason Statham action flick "Safe"; R-rated comedy "The Five-Year Engagement," from the team behind "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"; and animated kids' movie "Pirates! Band of Misfits."

Electronic books most often browsed by PC, downloaded by feature phone
By Ken Y-N ( April 24, 2012 at 01:27) ? Filed under Internet, Polls
japan.internet.com reported on the results of the third regular survey by goo Research into electronic books and uncovered some surprising usage patterns.
Demographics
Between the 2nd and 5h of April 2012 1,090 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.6% of the sample were male, 16.3% in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 21.6% in their thirties, 16.2% in their forties, and 27.7% aged fifty or older.
I?ve read bits and pieces of electronic books online from a PC, and downloaded to a PC and a PDA. I?d like to get a Kindle, although having said that I?ve still got a few paper books lying around that I haven?t got round to reading yet!

Video Games Interactive: T is for Too Human: A Gaming Masterpiece
One of my hobbies involves saying what other sites don't have the balls to. Speaking the truth is something that the games industry is severely lacking in. So when I feel a game doesn't warrant the recommended retail price, I'll tear it to shreds so that others can have a well-informed view from someone who isn't being paid to like it.
So what do I have to say regarding Silicon Knights' 2008 title Too Human??
It's a fantastic gaming masterpiece!
Much like Skyrim, Too Human does more things right than it does wrong.
What's so great about it, I hear you cry? Well, combat is some of the best the industry has seen. It's so fluid once you've gotten to grips, allowing the player to zoom from one enemy to another with the most grace I've ever been witness to.
The story, despite what your friend on Xbox LIVE tells you, is up there with the likes of Dragon Age and Uncharted, which follows the events of the Ragnar?k (Ragnar?kkr), which loosely translated means (Ragna) Reign (R?k) Fate, which alludes to the final days of the Norse gods.
This is no ordinary battle of Viking vs Viking. The futuristic tech lends itself perfectly to Norse mythology. The main character Baulder, son of Odin, is so diverse and conflicted that by the end of the game and ?the big reveal? you'll be glued to the edge of seat screaming ?OH MY GODS!?
Each of the four classes offer up something completely different. My favourites are the dual wielder, who drops health in favour of blinding damage-per-second, dancing around his foes as if combat is child?s play, and the gunner class, who has such an exciting array of weaponry that when he's at the max level, you almost feel like you're cheating ? Or that you're a god, which is kind of the point.
The point of Too Human wasn't to finish the game as soon as possible. The point was to level out a character and replay each level, which are massive and hold many, many secrets, with or without a friend while hunting for better loot. Something that reviewers have seemingly skimmed over.
With more good than bad, why is it that Too Human is now such a dirty word?
Preconceptions!
Gamers judged Too Human based on the demo, which I'll admit was horrible! These same gamers then went onto the big sites to read a review in which the reviewers, who are also gamers, attacked Too Human with preconceived impressions based from demo.
It's not some big conspiracy like I've seen some folks claim, but what it is, is people deciding how it plays without giving it a chance.
Ahead of this piece, I spoke to a selection of my contacts about Too Human. The majority launched into a tirade about how sh**** it is and how it was ten years of development wasted. That's fine by the way, people are allowed to hold different opinions to my own, but what annoys me is how question two is answered:
Q: Have you actually played Too Human?
A: No! Why would I want to subject myself to that cr**?
This is the response I got from almost everyone, that they haven't played it, but seem fit to pass judgement. This baffles me. I hate Modern Warfare 2 and 3. How do I know I hate it? Because each year I buy it, so that I can make a decision on if it's good or if it's awful. Which changes from year-to-year. For all the slagging off of COD I do, have you ever seen me slag of Black Ops? Nope. I love it!
My point here is that I judge games as they come. I will never rip a game apart based on hearsay or conjecture. If I'm going to moan about a title, I'll make sure I've damn-well played it to death before I start running my mouth, and by play it, I don't mean rent it, or for ten minutes round a friend?s house, I mean play it, as it was intended.
So let me finish with a few questions. Have you given Too Human a fair trial? Have you maxed out a character? Have you really seen everything it has to offer? Did you approach Too Human with preconceptions?
Did you pass sentence before the disk even made it into your drive?
Too Human is innovation and gameplay in its purest form, so if you are interested in giving Too Human a fair crack of the whip, or if you're after an exciting 1000 Gamerscore, there's still a huge action-RPG for you to explore, via Xbox LIVE's Games on Demand service. My disk may be scratched beyond repair, meaning it's been played to death, but if you want to try it out, by all means go for it! Just please wipe the slate clean and start afresh and form your own opinions on this gaming classic.

"The Great Gatsby" star Carey Mulligan has tied the knot with Mumford and Sons lead singer Marcus Mumford. The couple married over the weekend in England.
According to the Daily Mail, 200 guests were in attendance, including superstar pals Sienna Miller, Jake Gyllenhaal and Colin Firth. The British newspaper reported that Mulligan's dad, John, is a vicar and conducted the wedding, which took place on Saturday on a farm in Somerset. The couple married in a barn on the farm's grounds.
Mulligan reportedly wore an ivory backless dress designed by Versace. The groom was spotted driving to the ceremony wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses. The pair reportedly married in the English countryside because "it's where both of their families are from," according to People.com.
Firth reportedly gave a speech at the wedding, according to the Press Association, which reported that according to sources, "Colin was a pro at the speech. He was his charming self and had the room in fits."
The couple began dating in early 2011 and got engaged in August. Both had recently ended previous relationships, with Mulligan having split from actor Shia LaBeouf while Mumford had broken up with singer Laura Marling.
As the story goes, the newlyweds were also reportedly childhood pen pals through their church in London. They began dating after Mulligan attended a Mumford and Sons concert with Gyllenhaal.
"At the end of the night there were just the musicians, Jake, Carey and the Mumford boys," a source told Usmagazine.com about the night that sparked the romance. "We had some pizza, and just played music. Jake picked up a guitar and Carey joined in on 'Amazing Grace.' Marcus and Carey seemed really friendly."
