Live chat recap: Anna Griffin, readers talk about mental health care ...

?

On Monday, The Oregonian's Anna Griffin hosted a live chat about her report Mental illness: A difficult diagnosis with sometimes deadly consequences.

Millions of children don't receive the mental health support they need, Griffin wrote. Those with potentially severe mental illnesses, the type that can morph into something deadly as adolescence evolves into young adulthood, aren't diagnosed early enough. They're not getting the compassionate, thorough care that will help them make smart decisions once they reach the age of consent.

In Monday's chat, readers had many questions for Griffin and even more opinions. Why did she choose to approach the story the way she did? What can we as a community do to prevent another Newtown? How can officials improve access to mental health care? What roles should schools and parents play in helping kids in trouble?
