Tom Hanks in "Lucky Guy."
Musicals dominated nominations for the 67th Tony Awards, which were announced Tuesday morning by the American Theatre Wing. "Kinky Boots," "Matilda the Musical" and the latest version of "Pippin" took in 13, 12 and 10 nominations each, while Tom Hanks earned his first nomination for his lead role in "Lucky Guy," Nora Ephron's final play.
"Lucky," a play based on the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mike McAlary, also earned five other nominations, including best play and best performance by an actor in a featured role in a play (Courtney B. Vance). Only "Golden Boy," a revival of the Clifford Odets play about an aspiring violinist-turned-boxer, brought in more straight play nominations than "Lucky," with six (including best revival and two for best performance by an actor in a featured role in a play -- for Danny Burstein and Tony Shalhoub).
The success of "Kinky Boots," a story about a drag queen and a shoemaker, also means Cyndi Lauper can now claim a Tony nomination; the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" singer is responsible for the play's music and lyrics, while Harvey Fierstein (who wrote the book) also received a nomination. In other rock-stars-turned-musical-writers news, former Phish member Trey Anastasio earned a nomination for his music, co-written with fellow nominee Amanda Green, for "Hands on a Hardbody."
Other Hollywood names picking up nominations include David Hyde Pierce ("Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike"), Laurie Metcalf ("The Other Place"), Holland Taylor ("Ann"), Cicely Tyson ("The Trip to Bountiful"), Judith Ivey ("The Heiress"), Judith Light ("The Assembled Parties") and Keith Carradine ("Hands on a Hardbody").
But notably missing from potential nominations were names like Bette Midler ("I'll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers"), Katie Holmes ("Dead Accounts") and both "Heiress" leads Jessica Chastain and Dan Stevens.
A full list of nominees can be found here.
The Tony Awards will be broadcast on CBS from Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, June 9, at 8 p.m. A host has not yet been announced.
