China School Attack: Officials Say Knife-Wielding Man Was Affected By 'Doomsday Rumors'
BEIJING -- Officials say a man who went into a school in central China and stabbed 23 children last week was "psychologically affected" by doomsday predictions.
Min Yongjun is suspected of going into an elderly woman's house Friday morning and stabbing her with a kitchen knife. He then allegedly went to a nearby elementary school in Chenpeng village in Guangshan county and injured the 23 children before being stopped by teachers and police.
He was arrested on suspicion of jeopardizing public security.
A statement from the Guangshan county government said Monday that police would evaluate Min's psychological state, but that initial investigations found that he was strongly affected by "doomsday rumors."
Some people believe the Mayan calendar predicts an apocalypse this Friday.

Jack Hanlon, actor in Our Gang films, dies in Nev.
RENO, Nev. (AP) ? Jack Hanlon, who had roles in the 1926 silent classic "The General" and in two 1927 "Our Gang" comedies, died Thursday in Las Vegas, family members said Sunday. He was 96.
The precocious, freckle-faced Hanlon was a natural as a child actor from 1926 to 1933, said his niece, Wendy Putnam Park of Las Vegas.
"He was absolutely the sweetest, most charming man," Park told The Associated Press. "He loved talking about being in the movies if you brought the subject up. He loved sharing stories about being in them."
After a small role with Buster Keaton in "The General," he played mischievous kids in two of Hal Roach's "Our Gang/Little Rascals" films: "The Glorious Fourth" and "Olympic Games."
Hanlon also played an orphan in the 1929 drama "The Shakedown," and got an on-screen kiss from Greta Garbo in the 1930 film "Romance."
He appeared in eight more "talkies," including "Big Money" with Clark Gable, in the 1930s before calling it a career at the age of 16. He rarely made more than $5 a day.
His friend, Bob Satterfield, told the Las Vegas Sun that he watched the Our Gang films and "The General" with Hanlon.
"He told me it was like watching someone else because it was a lifetime ago ... Jack led a full life," Satterfield, a Southern California high school activities director and silent film buff, told the Sun.
After leaving Hollywood, Hanlon became an Army paratrooper and mover for Allied Van Lines. He had resided in Las Vegas for 18 years, Park said, and lived in his own home until October when he moved to an assisted living center.
"Surprisingly, he was in good physical shape until two months ago," Park said. "He liked being independent and watching old movies on TV. He basically died of old age."
He will be buried in Santa Monica, Calif., along with his wife of 37 years, Jean.
Survivors include two other nieces and a nephew.

Blood Pact: Soloing the vanilla raids for pets and more
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Blood Pact for affliction, demonology, and destruction warlocks. This week, Megan O'Neill laments being knocked successfully up past the Suppression Room, only to pull the boss and be knocked back down and across the Suppression Room while the original knockback mobs die. UGH.
Blood Pact is a weekly column detailing DOTs, demons and all the dastardly deeds done by warlocks. We'll coach you in the fine art of staying alive, help pick the best target for Dark Intent, and steer you through tier 13 set bonuses.
Well, Naxxramas is big enough that I'll leave a whole article to it. The other raids from the original raiding scene of level 60 can fit into one since they're relatively easy to do. The roadblocks to finishing them are largely mechanical tricks, not damage output or survivability problems.
There's no real difference between the specs in these earliest raids. I run as destruction mostly because it's fast-paced, but any spec and almost any talent setup can do these raids.
Molten Core
The hardest part of Molten Core is not having enough health to Burning Rush all the time. Once you've killed everyone that isn't Majordomo Executus, you can complete the Majordomo's encounter, and then you get the lovely run back almost to the entrance to get to Ragnaros himself.
You can run by trash mobs without attracting attention, and if you need more than two hands to count the number of casts it takes to kill a boss at 90, you're either AFK or doing it wrong. (It could be argued you should only need one hand.)
The only tricks you may need to know about are the corehound trash, Baron Geddon, and Ragnaros's knockback. The corehounds before Lucifron and Magmadar need to be killed all together. It's most satisfying now to go ahead and pull all 4-5 packs between Lucifron and Magmadar and Rain them down together.
Baron Geddon's trick is that he might blow you up in the air if you don't burst him down far enough. It's quite a knock-up, so putting a Demonic Circle underneath you is just a quality-of-life tip. Ragnaros will similarly knock you back a fair distance, so pop a teleport just in case.
Besides nostalgia, Molten Core has some cool loot drops, even without the pets added in patch 5.1. Tier 1 can be found here, as well as the pants to tier 2 (if you're a pants kind of warlock). However, the tier drops will require some trash killing if you want the entire 8-piece set:
- Horns -- Garr
- Shoulders -- Shazzrah
- Robes -- Golemagg
- Bracers -- trash mobs
- Gloves -- Lucifron
- Belt -- trash mobs
- Pants -- Magmadar
- Slippers -- Shazzrah
Blackwing Descent is familiar to Cataclysm players. Blackwing Lair has a Nefarian as well, except he's level 60 and the entrance to the place is inside Blackrock Mountain, not outside. The raid still lies behind an attunement, which is basically to run Upper Blackrock Spire after killing a specific mob outside the instance. After that, you can walk into the Lair simply by touching the Orb of Command.
Just in case you do die while inside Blackwing Lair, getting back to your body involves: run up the chain, run behind or underneath the rock dwarf holding the chain, jump onto the balcony with the spirit angel, and run up the hallway to the Orb of Command, which will resurrect you.
For tier 2 (Nemesis Raiment) drops, visit these bosses over and over again:
- Head -- Onyxia, whom I'll visit in a solo guide later.
- Shoulders -- Chromaggus
- Robes -- Nefarian
- Bracers -- Razorgore
- Gloves -- Ebonroc, Firemaw, or Flamegor
- Belt -- Vaelastrasz
- Leggings -- Ragnaros has them in the Molten Core!
- Boots -- Broodlord Lashlayer
If you exit the mind control with Razorgore at the opposite end of the room, you have enough time to take care of the adds before he gets back across to smack you. Otherwise, the only thing you need to know is to hit your 4 key (the claw icon ability) to destroy the eggs around the room.
For Vaelastrasz, you'll want to soulstone yourself (unless you like running back), since his Burning Adrenaline debuff will kill you at the end.
The other pain in the rear mechanic is the Suppression Room, which will slow you to an ungodly movement speed so long as you are unable to disarm the pillars in it. There are two tricks to this room. One, you can lay down your Demonic Gateway to skip most of the room's length. You still have to run for some of it, and it takes forever, though not nearly as forever as without.
The other option is to pull the preceding dragonkin trash up to Suppression Room with you. Some of the dragonkin have a knockback that knocks you up in the air, which you can use to jump the levels of the room so you're squarely at the boss instead of running the entire way. Just be careful that you don't get bounced back down, since the knockbacks can happen in quick succession. Kill the boss at the end of the Suppression Room to lift the gate and resume your normal speed.
After the Suppression Room, the bosses are fairly nukeable. The only possible annoyance is the Blackwing Spellbinder trash, which are immune to spells. Pull out a melee pet to chomp on these. Use the hourglass sand if Chromaggus gives you trouble, but you should be able to burst Chromaggus down before two debuffs go out.
If you wait long enough on Nefarian, he'll force you to summon Infernals, but you should be able to kill him within seconds of his landing. loot his head for a spectacular trophy hanging in your faction's capital.
Temple of Ahn'Qiraj (AQ40)There are the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj -- named AQ20 for its 20-man size -- but there are no pet drops or other fancy drops. The most interesting things I find in there are looting old grimoires.
In AQ40, however, there's plenty of goodies to be found. There's a whole bunch of scarabs and Husks of the Old God that you can use to craft old weapons and gear through quests, but I usually vendor or delete these items. Throughout the raid, you can mount up, and there are specific AQ-only bug mounts that drop in AQ40. Yellow, blue, and green are the common colors; red is the rarer color, but within a few runs you should find one for yourself.
For battle pet hunters, find these AQ40 bosses:
Most of the bosses have simple tactics if you don't burst them down. Skeram will duplicate himself and interrupt casts, so use instant spells only. Fankriss might web you if you don't kill him first and Princess Huhurran (the wasp boss) can silence you with a Noxious Poison.Notable trash mobs include the Vekniss guardian mobs, which can knock you high into the air, and the Anubisath mobs. The Anubisaths will be immune to and reflect back damage of two magic schools. The combinations are Fire and Arcane or Shadow and Frost; either way, Fel Flame is a great workaround solution.
Viscidus might seem impossible at first glance since warlocks have no frost spells. But the damage done from Archimonde's Vengeance counts as all damage schools, including frost, so with this talent Viscidus will seemingly automatically freeze up for you. To shatter him, simply bring along a melee pet and prepare to stab him with your own melee autoattacks.
Twin Emperors used to be a hard DPS check to do entirely solo; now, at 90 in even 480-ish gear, it's pretty easy as a 90 warlock. When the two are near each other, they heal themselves; you must out-damage the heal. As a caster, you can only damage Vek'lor (the caster guy), as Vek'nilash (the melee guy) is immune to magic damage, but they share a health pool. Vek'nilash will do a knockback, and Kil'jaeden's Cunning just makes the Chaos Bolts less painful. If you want to add some spice to the encounter, don't clear any of the Anubisath mobs in the previous hallway, so they'll come party with you when you engage the twins.
C'thun will transport you to his stomach after you kill his eye. Kill the tentacles inside, port out on the platform, and then kill his body. In the room after C'thun are three dragons in humanoid form who will craft you items if you bring certain parts like scarabs of Husks of the Old God.

Countries are now moving forward under two different communications systems to govern telecommunications and the Internet,?as the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT)?concluded Friday with member states failing to arrive at consensus.
Eighty-nine countries were in favor of a controversial new version of the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITRs), which now?includes the decision to create a global emergency telephone number, greater broadband access for persons with disabilities and provisions to address spam. This version was strongly objected to by the U.S.-led delegation, which will not abide by the new rules.
Among the 89?signatories?were Afghanistan, Bahrain, China, Cuba, Iran, Russia and various African states.
The 55 countries who opposed the new version of the ITRs include the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, Sweden, Poland, India, Kenya and others. The U.S. and its allies heavily objected to the regulation of content and Internet companies.
A breakdown in talks between the delegations late Thursday evening?? spurred by?heavy?opposition?by the U.S. delegation and its allies ? left?International Telecommunication Union (ITU) secretary general?Dr. Hamadoun Toure ?very much surprised?,?reported?the Associated Press.
The 89 countries supporting the new version of the treaty have argued for greater government control of the Internet, which they argued will encourage its continued growth by discontinuing a system they said favored the U.S.
Despite insistence by Toure Thursday evening that the treaty does not address the Internet, supporters looked to wrest control of the growth the Internet from what they said is system that favored the U.S.
The controversial resolution to ?foster an enabling environment for the greater growth of the Internet? ? which mentions the Internet 9 times ? was?included?in the final version of the treaty signed at the end of the conference.
The ITU?expressed?optimism about the 55 countries, stating the they ?may sign later.?
ITU spokesperson Sarah Parkes told Bloomberg that the countries not signing the would remain under the version of treaty passed in 1988, when?the treaty was last updated. Opponents to the treaty revision argued that the conditions created by the 1988 agreement spawned the success of the Internet.
?This sounds much like a digital version of the cold war,? writes The Economist. ?The funny thing is that the leading countries in the two camps are the same two that were at loggerheads until the iron curtain parted. One must hope that the failure of the WCIT is not a first step towards raising a digital one.?
In 1988, the decision to enshrine the deregulation of telecommunications networks in the ITRs sparked?similar controversy.
Final conference stats provided by the ITU show that of the 193 member states involved with the ITU, 155 were present at the conference and 144 had voting power because they had paid dues.
The treaty is expected to take affect January 2015.

ALBANY, GA -- Residents in Plains made their way into the street tonight to bring in the Christmas season.
Floats from the fire and police departments made their way along the parade route, as locals lined the street.
Former President, Jimmy Carter, was also in attendance, and addressed the crowd from a balcony above the parade.
"We're always glad to see how many people come and enjoy it with us, so whether you stay here or are just driving through, enjoy the lights!" said President Carter.
Officials with the parade say its always an honor to have President Carter in attendance, and added that the parade went on without a hitch.

Apple to produce line of Macs in the U.S. next year
NEW YORK (AP) -- Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company will move production of one of its existing lines of Mac computers to the United States next year.
Industry watchers said the announcement is both a cunning public-relations move and a harbinger of more manufacturing jobs moving back to the U.S. as wages rise in China.
Cook made the comments in part of an interview taped for NBC's "Rock Center," but aired Thursday morning on "Today" and posted on the network's website.
In a separate interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, he said that the company will spend $100 million in 2013 to move production of the line to the U.S. from China.
"This doesn't mean that Apple will do it ourselves, but we'll be working with people and we'll be investing our money," Cook told Bloomberg.
That suggests the company could be helping one of its Taiwanese manufacturing partners, which run factories in China, to set up production lines in the U.S. devoted to Apple products. Research firm IHS iSuppli noted that both Foxconn Technology Group, which assembles iPhones, and Quanta Computer Inc., which does the same for MacBooks, already have small operations in the U.S.
Apple representatives had no comment Thursday beyond Cook's remarks.
Like most consumer electronics companies, Apple forges agreements with contract manufacturers to assemble its products overseas. However, the assembly accounts for a fraction of the cost of making a PC or smartphone. Most of the cost lies in buying chips, and many of those are made in the U.S., Cook noted in his interview with NBC.
The company and Foxconn have faced significant criticism this year over working conditions at the Chinese facilities where Apple products are assembled. The attention prompted Foxconn to raise salaries.
Cook didn't say which line of computers would be produced in the U.S. or where in the country they would be made. But he told Bloomberg that the production would include more than just final assembly. That suggests that machining of cases and printing of circuit boards could take place in the U.S.
The simplest Macs to assemble are the Mac Pro and Mac Mini desktop computers. Since they lack the built-in screens of the MacBooks and iMacs, they would likely be easier to separate from the Asian display supply chain.
Analyst Jeffrey Wu at IHS iSuppli said it's not uncommon for PC makers to build their bulkier products close to their customers to cut down on delivery times and shipping costs.
Regardless, the U.S. manufacturing line is expected to represent just a tiny piece of Apple's overall production, with sales of iPhones and iPads now dwarfing those of its computers.
Apple is latching on to a trend that could see many jobs move back to the U.S., said Hal Sirkin, a partner with The Boston Consulting Group. He noted that Lenovo Group, the Chinese company that's neck-and-neck with Hewlett-Packard Co. for the title of world's largest PC maker, announced in October that it will start making PCs and tablets in the U.S.
Chinese wages are raising 15 to 20 percent per year, Sirkin said. U.S. wages are rising much more slowly, and the country is a cheap place to hire compared to other developed countries like Germany, France and Japan, he said.
"Across a lot of industries, companies are rethinking their strategy of where the manufacturing takes place," Sirkin said.
Carl Howe, an analyst with Yankee Group, likened Apple's move to Henry Ford's famous 1914 decision to double his workers' pay, helping to build a middle class that could afford to buy cars. But Cook's goal is probably more limited: to buy goodwill from U.S. consumers, Howe said.
"Say it's State of the Union 2014. President Obama wants to talk about manufacturing. Who is he going to point to in the audience? Tim Cook, the guy who brought manufacturing back from China. And that scene is going replay over and over," Howe said. "And yeah, it may be only (public relations), but it's a lot of high-value PR."
Cook said in his interview with NBC that companies like Apple chose to produce their products in places like China, not because of the lower costs associated with it, but because the manufacturing skills required just aren't present in the U.S. anymore.
He added that the consumer electronics world has never really had a big production presence in the U.S. As a result, it's really more about starting production in the U.S. than bringing it back, he said.
But for nearly three decades Apple made its computers in the U.S. It started outsourcing production in the mid-90s, first by selling some plants to contract manufacturers, then by hiring manufacturers overseas. It assembled iMacs in Elk Grove, Calif., until 2004.
Some Macs already say they're "Assembled in USA." That's because Apple has for years performed final assembly of some units in the U.S. Those machines are usually the product of special orders placed at its online store. The last step of production may consist of mounting hard drives, memory chips and graphics cards into computer cases that are manufactured elsewhere. With Cook's announcement Thursday, the company is set to go much further in the amount of work done in the U.S.
The news comes a day after Apple posted its worst stock drop in four years, erasing $35 million in market capitalization. Apple's stock rose $8.45, or 1.6 percent, to close at $547.24 Thursday.

Tanks outside Mursi's palace, streets calmer
CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian army tanks deployed outside the presidential palace on Thursday in streets where supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Mursi had clashed into the early hours of the morning in violence that killed five people.
Armored troop carriers also moved into the roads around the palace, in what Egypt's state news agency said was a measure to secure the palace. The area had become a chaotic battleground between Mursi's Islamist backers and their opponents.
The soldiers' badges identified them as members of the Presidential Guard and Republican Guard, whose duties include guarding the presidency. At least five tanks and nine armored personnel carriers were seen near or around the palace.
The health ministry said five people had been killed and 350 wounded in bloodshed that has exacerbated the worst crisis since Mursi took office as Egypt's first president since a popular uprising overthrew Hosni Mubarak in February, 2011.
The military played a crucial role in ending Mubarak's 30-year rule by taking over from him to manage a transitional period, but it has stayed out of the latest crisis.
Mursi's opponents accuse him of seeking to create a new autocracy by awarding himself extraordinary powers in a decree on November 22 and were further angered when an Islamist-dominated assembly pushed through a draft constitution that opponents said did not properly represent the aspirations of the whole nation.
The president has defended his decree as necessary to prevent courts still full of judges appointed by Mubarak from derailing a constitution vital for Egypt's political transition.
Around the palace, traffic was moving through streets strewn with rocks thrown during violence in which petrol bombs and guns were also used. Hundreds of Mursi supporters were still in the area, many wrapped in blankets and some reading the Koran.
"We came here to support President Mursi and his decisions. He is the elected president of Egypt," said demonstrator Emad Abou Salem, 40. "He has legitimacy and nobody else does."
MUTUAL ACCUSATIONS
An opposition group called for more protests at the palace later on Thursday, setting the stage for further confrontation.
Mursi's opponents say the Muslim Brotherhood, the group that propelled the president to power in a June election, is behind the violence. The Brotherhood says the opposition is to blame and that the five dead were all Mursi supporters. The United States, worried about the stability of an Arab state which has a peace deal with Israel and which receives $1.3 billion in U.S. military aid, urged dialogue. Britain also called for restraint and an "inclusive" political process.
A presidential source said Mursi, silent in the last few days, was expected to make a statement later on Thursday.
Vice President Mahmoud Mekky proposed "personal ideas" for a negotiated way out on Wednesday, saying amendments to disputed articles in the constitution could be agreed with the opposition. A written agreement could then go to parliament, to be elected after a referendum on the constitution on December 15.
"There must be consensus," he told a news conference in the presidential palace as fighting raged outside on Wednesday. But the opposition stuck by its demand for Mursi to cancel the November 22 decree and postpone the referendum before any dialogue.
Protests spread to other cities, and offices of the Muslim Brotherhood's political party in Ismailia and Suez were torched.
But Mursi has shown no sign of buckling under pressure from protesters, confident that the Islamists, who have dominated both elections since Mubarak was overthrown, can win the referendum and parliamentary election to follow.
As well as relying on his Brotherhood power base, Mursi may also draw on a popular yearning for stability and economic revival after almost two years of political turmoil.
Opposition coordinator Mohamed ElBaradei said on Wednesday the street action and the polarization of society were pushing Egypt into violence and "could draw us to something worse".
The Egyptian pound plunged 4 percent on Thursday to its lowest level in eight years, after previously firming on hopes that a $4.8 billion IMF loan would stabilize the economy. The Egyptian stock market fell 4.4 percent after it opened.

Cameron relives trip to bottom of ocean
SAN FRANCISCO?? The first thing James Cameron saw 7 miles below the sea was man-made: tracks from a remotely operated vehicle.
"When I got to the bottom, I saw skid marks from the ROV," Cameron said Tuesday here at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union, referring to a 2009 survey by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Scientific results of the film director's expedition to the Mariana Trench were presented at the meeting this week, and Cameron and the researchers described the highlights to a packed crowd.
Cameron reported a new, corrected depth for his landing ? 35,803 feet (10,912 meters) ? which beats by five feet (1.5 m) the record set by U.S. Navy Lt. Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard in 1960 at the same spot. However, "because the error (calculating the depth) on Don's dive is much greater, we're just going to have to call it a tie," Cameron said.
Deepsea Challenger
Cameron's Deepsea Challenger expedition made dives to the New Britain Trench and the Mariana Trench in the southwestern Pacific Ocean between Jan. 31 and April 3, with one manned dive by Cameron to the Mariana's Challenger Deep, the deepest spot in any ocean.

The two contraptions working together proved to be a very good system, Cameron said. "We could rendezvous on the bottom and see the results of that bait running for six to eight hours, and that's how Doug could find a new species of giant arthropod," Cameron said.
Challenging journey
The March 26 dive proved to be a physical and mental challenge for Cameron. "I did yoga for six months so I could contort myself into the sphere," he said.
As he sank through the water, Cameron said he "burned though my whole checklist," designed to distract him during the long hours of the dive. "I still had 3,000 meters left to go with pretty much nothing left to do but sit quietly and think about the pressure building up around the hull," he said.
The sub touched down gently, and Cameron immediately took a sample of the seafloor, as planned. This was a good contingency, because the sub's hydraulic fluid line then burst, leaving him unable to collect more samples.
To his surprise, the sub's voice communications worked perfectly. "We actually expected they wouldn't, and I would have to default to texting," he said. "Texting while driving is not a good thing, especially if you're using two hands to operate seven joysticks and you're 7 miles down."

Cameron first drove the sub about 200 meters, finding the seafloor elevation stayed the same. In fact, Challenger Deep turned out to be remarkably flat, and the sub was easy to drive. "The vehicle was quite nimble, the sub's yaw rate was very good," he said. (Yaw describes the left-to-right rotation of a craft.)
A quick return
After about three hours, some of the submersible's batteries had low charge readings, the steering was problematic, and it was time to return to the surface. The mission should have lasted five to six hours. "I hate this. I hated having to go back," Cameron recalled thinking.
The trip to the top was mercifully short at 73 minutes. The submersible covered nearly 7 miles in a little over an hour ? slow in a car, but like riding a missile for a human in a metal ball. Cameron said the surface trip is when he noticed the aches and pains from the cramped sub. "That's when your butt is really sore, and when you notice how much it hurts." The sub now sits in a barn in Santa Barbara, waiting for Cameron or another group with enough money to send it back to the deep ocean. He declined to say how much it cost to build and mount the expedition.
"I would love for the sub to dive again," he said. "I personally feel that we just barely got started before we had to turn back and there's just so much out there."
"And if not, at the very least, the technical innovations can be incorporated into other vehicle platforms," Cameron added. "As far as I'm concerned, it's an open source situation."

Ruppert, White, O'Day elected to Baseball Hall of Fame ? Sports ...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Nearly a century after turning the New York Yankees into the game?s most dominant franchise, former owner Jacob Ruppert was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday along with 19th century player Deacon White and umpire Hank O?Day.
O?Day, Ruppert and White each got the necessary 75 percent of the vote from the Hall?s 16-member Pre-Integration Era Committee, which considered six former players, three executives and one umpire who made significant contributions from professional baseball?s origins through 1946.
Ruppert and O?Day were named on 15 ballots and White received 14 votes. The results were announced Monday as the Winter Meetings opened at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Resort.
Ruppert bought the Yankees in 1915 and turned the franchise into a powerhouse when he purchased slugger Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox prior to the 1920 season. The Yankees won 10 American League pennants and seven World Series in the 24 seasons in which Ruppert owned the team.
White played primarily catcher and spent 20 seasons in the major leagues from 1871-90, compiling 2,067 hits in just 1,560 games with a .312 batting average. He won the National Association batting title in 1875 and then the National League crown two years later, both with Boston-based teams.
O?Day umpired 10 World Series, including the inaugural event in 1903. He was a National League umpire for 30 years after pitching in the major leagues from 1984-90.
Bill Dahlen received 10 votes and Sam Breadon, Wes Ferrell, Marty Marion, Tony Mullane, Alfred Reach and Bucky Walters were named on three ballots or fewer.
Ruppert, White and O?Day will be inducted in Cooperstown, N.Y., on Jan. 28 along with any modern-day players elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Health News - Drug shows promise in prostate cancer spread to bone
Tumors were reduced on bone scans, bone pain decreased after patients received cabozantinib
?
ANN ARBOR, Mich. ? A new drug demonstrated dramatic and rapid effects on prostate cancer that had spread to the bone, according to a study reported by University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers.
About two-thirds of patients treated with cabozantinib had improvements on their bone scans, with 12 percent seeing complete resolution of uptake on bone scan. Bone scans assess the degree to which cancer is in the bone; improvements on these scans suggest a response to the drug.
?The effects of cabozantinib on bone scans are unprecedented in the treatment of prostate cancer,? says lead study author David C. Smith, M.D., professor of internal medicine and urology at the University of Michigan Medical School.
Cabozantinib is designed to target two important pathways linked to the growth and spread of prostate cancer. The drug had the most effect on tumors that had spread to the bone, which is the major site where prostate cancer spreads. These tumors are typically very challenging to treat once they become resistant to hormone-based therapies.
In addition to the improvements on bone scans, 67 percent of patients with bone pain reported an improvement in pain control and 56 percent decreased or eliminated narcotic painkillers after treatment with cabozantinib. Results of the study appear in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
The trial enrolled 171 men with castration-resistant prostate cancer, meaning their tumors no longer responded to hormone-based therapies. The study began as a randomized trial in which all patients received cabozantinib for 12 weeks, after which patients were randomized to receive continued cabozantinib or placebo. The randomization was stopped early because of the dramatic effects on bone scan, and because patients receiving placebo saw their cancer progress much more quickly than those that remained on drug.
Among the 31 patients who were randomized, cancer progressed after a median 23.9 weeks for patients taking cabozantinib, compared with 5.9 weeks for patients on placebo.
?Discontinuing randomization is not common. Stabilization of disease in advanced prostate cancer is rarely due to the natural history of the disease and is in this case due to drug effect,? Smith says.
?While these initial results are promising, we are still uncertain how cabozantinib will impact the gold standard of survival,? he adds.
Phase III studies have begun at some institutions, and U-M researchers are conducting a phase II study to better understand the effect cabozantinib has on bone. This drug is not offered routinely in clinical care at this time. Sign Language Researchers Broaden Science Lexicon
Imagine trying to learn biology without ever using the word ?organism.? Or studying to become a botanist when the only way of referring to photosynthesis is to spell the word out, letter by painstaking letter.
For deaf students, this game of scientific Password has long been the daily classroom and laboratory experience. Words like ?organism? and ?photosynthesis? ? to say nothing of more obscure and harder-to-spell terms ? have no single widely accepted equivalent in sign language. This means that deaf students and their teachers and interpreters must improvise, making it that much harder for the students to excel in science and pursue careers in it.
?Often times, it would involve a lot of finger-spelling and a lot of improvisation,? said Matthew Schwerin, a physicist with the Food and Drug Administration who is deaf, of his years in school. ?For the majority of scientific terms,? Mr. Schwerin and his interpreter for the day would ?try to find a correct sign for the term, and if nothing was pre-existing, we would come up with a sign that was agreeable with both parties.?
Now thanks to the Internet ? particularly the boom in online video ? resources for deaf students seeking science-related signs are easier to find and share. Crowdsourcing projects in both American Sign Language and British Sign Language are under way at several universities, enabling people who are deaf to coalesce around signs for commonly used terms.
This year, one of those resources, the Scottish Sensory Centre?s British Sign Language Glossary Project, added 116 new signs for physics and engineering terms, including signs for ?light-year,?? (hold one hand up and spread the fingers downward for ?light,? then bring both hands together in front of your chest and slowly move them apart for ?year?), ?mass? and ?X-ray? (form an X with your index fingers, then, with the index finger on the right hand, point outward).?
The signs were developed by a team of researchers at the center, a division of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland that develops learning tools for students with visual and auditory impairments. The researchers spent more than a year soliciting ideas from deaf science workers, circulating lists of potential signs and ultimately gathering for ?an intense weekend? of final voting, said Audrey Cameron, science adviser for the project. (Dr. Cameron is also deaf, and like all non-hearing people interviewed for this article, answered questions via e-mail.)
Whether the Scottish Sensory Centre?s signs will take hold among its audience remains to be seen. ?Some will be adopted, and some will probably never be accepted,? Dr. Cameron said. ?We?ll have to wait and see what happens.?
Ideally, the standardization of signs will make it easier for deaf students to keep pace with their hearing classmates during lectures. ?I can only choose to look at one thing at a time,? said Mr. Schwerin of the F.D.A., recalling his science education, ?and it often meant choosing between the interpreter, the blackboard/screen/material, or taking notes. It was like, pick one, and lose out on the others.?
The problem doesn?t end at graduation. In fact, it only intensifies as new discoveries add unfamiliar terms to the scientific lexicon. ?I?ve had numerous meetings where I couldn?t participate properly because the interpreters were not able to understand the jargon and they did not know any scientific signs,? Dr. Cameron said.
One general complaint about efforts to standardize signs for technical terms is the idea that, much like spoken language, sign language should be allowed to develop organically rather than be dictated from above.
?Signs that are developed naturally ? i.e., that are tested and refined in everyday conversation ? are more likely to be accepted quickly by the community,? said Derek Braun, director of the molecular genetics laboratory at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., which he said was the first biological laboratory designed and administered by deaf scientists.
Since at least the 1970s, deaf scientists have tried to address the lack of uniformity by gathering common signs for scientific terms in printed manuals and on videotapes. The problem has always been getting deaf students and their interpreters to adopt them.
Often, at science conferences, ?local interpreters that we never met before would often use different signs for the same terms, leading to confusion,? said Caroline Solomon, a biology professor at Gallaudet University who is deaf.

Dana White stirs up controversy in role as homeless man during Fox NFL Sunday
A tiny role as a homeless guy in a not-so-funny betting skit on the Fox NFL Sunday show has created yet another Internet uproar about UFC president Dana White.
In a skit in which comedian Rob Riggle was doing a rather flat impersonation of a pro football tipster, White appeared toward the end as a homeless man in a box. In the skit, Riggle had been bragging about his network of sources and said he'd take information from anyone who could help him make his picks.
The video cuts to White, who said in an odd voice, "Cam Newton is pregnant. Ha ha ha ha!"
The cast on the Fox NFL Sunday show laughed and pointed out that it was White and that the UFC has a card airing on Saturday from Key Arena in Seattle. It seemed like a harmless, though not very funny, way to get a free mention of his fight card during a highly watched NFL broadcast.
But then, one of White's nearly 2.4 million Twitter followers, Jason Wozny, chastised him. Wozny, whose handle is @UFCWozny, gave the UFC president a bit of blowback.
Wozny wrote, "Ahh, done in bad taste Dana. Not funny for those who actually live out of a box. Should apologize"
If you know White even remotely well, you knew there would be a response but that it wouldn't be an apology. And, of course, White's response created a firestorm of its own.
He took a shot at Wozny and referred to him with a slang word for coward.
Wozny stuck to his guns and told White the thought the skit was in bad taste. White responded with another insult and urged him to get a sense of humor.
But White was hardly trying to poke fun at homeless people or make light of their plight. He was using unconventional, and probably not very effective, means to try to promote his fight. The UFC's most highly watched Fox card to date was its first, on Nov. 12, 2011, when Junior dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez to win the heavyweight title.
It's no coincidence that show got by far the highest ratings of any of the four Fox cards to date, given that it was the only one aired during NFL season and that it got a ton of promotional assistance on Fox NFL broadcasts.
White took the opportunity to access the massive NFL audience to pump up his fight.
He's been way in the wrong on things before. He used a slur used to describe homosexuals during an unbelievably over-the-top rant in 2009 against then-Sherdog reporter Loretta Hunt. He later apologized to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and has subsequently said that's the one thing in his career he regrets.
He's also looked the other way as some of his fighters have openly harassed female reporters with lewd and suggestive comments.
But White did nothing wrong here. He certainly didn't offend homeless people, and he wasn't trying to lessen their plight in any way.
Wozny deserves much respect for at least standing up for the downtrodden, though I think he was overcome by a bad case of political correctness.
Going over the 'fiscal cliff': why more are sounding ready to take the plunge
With negotiations still appearing stalled, a growing chorus on the left and right has been suggesting that a so-called "cliff dive" wouldn't be so bad. Better than cutting a bad deal, anyway.

And while we still tend to think that a deal will be struck before year?s end (Congress being essentially like newspaper journalists, needing the threat of an imminent deadline to get anything done), we?ve also been struck by the small-but-growing chorus of so-called ?cliff divers? ? partisans on both sides arguing that going over the cliff might actually be the most palatable option.
In many cases, of course, this kind of talk may just be part of the game of chicken, designed to scare the other side into making concessions.
But increasingly, some seem to be genuinely concluding that going over the cliff would in fact be the best choice ? better than what they fear is shaping up to be a disastrous, hastily constructed deal on taxes and spending that would then be much harder to undo.
Initially, it was mostly those on the left voicing this argument ? in part because that would actually accomplish one of their chief goals: ending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy (and, the thinking goes, Democrats could then come back and reinstate the middle-class tax cuts in 2013). As far back as last summer, Sen. Patty Murray (D) of Washington said in a speech at the Brookings Institution: ?I will absolutely continue this debate into 2013, rather than lock in a long-term deal this year that throws middle-class families under the bus.??
Lately, a number of voices on the right have been making essentially the same case. ?Our preferred strategy here would be to accept the sequester now, knowing that Congress is not going to do something more rational ? they?re not going to take on more fundamental spending reforms ? and push off increasing taxes,? Matt Kibbe, president of the conservative advocacy group FreedomWorks, told MSNBC Monday morning.
Likewise, outgoing GOP Rep. Joe Walsh of Illinois, who has close ties to the tea party, told Bloomberg last week: ?The thing that would be much worse would be to craft a bad deal that would do anything that raises taxes. Doing what?s right over the next couple weeks is more important than doing something that would harm our economy in the name of meeting a silly deadline.?
One other indication that the once ?unthinkable? option may be becoming more widely ?thinkable? is the shift in the language describing it. There?s been a deliberate effort in recent weeks to rebrand the fiscal ?cliff? as more of a fiscal ?slope,? with a number of lawmakers, as well as prominent investors like Warren Buffett, arguing that, counter to all the doomsday predictions, the US economy wouldn?t go off the rails in January if Congress failed to act. ?It?s not like something cataclysmic happens on Dec. 31,? Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont told Politico last week.
That?s because many of the automatic cuts wouldn?t actually go into effect for another few months at least ? giving lawmakers additional time to work out a solution in the new year. Likewise, the Internal Revenue Service would have some flexibility about when to implement the new tax rates, and could even retroactively reverse any tax hikes, if a deal is reached later on.
Of course, no one knows exactly how the markets would react if Congress did allow the country to go over the cliff (and most analysts agree the immediate consequences would not be good). But the rise in those arguing that any broad economic effects would likely be gradual ? and more changeable ? than has been often represented may be helping to make such an outcome more likely.
