Credit Card Debt Fell While Delinquencies Rose in 4Q: Report

Americans racked up less credit card debt in the fourth quarter but more people fell behind on their payments.

Average credit card debt per borrower fell 1.6% from a year earlier, to $5,122, while the share of borrowers whose loans were at least 90 days past due rose seven basis points, to 0.85%, the credit agency TransUnion said Wednesday.

That compares with an average 90-day delinquency rate of 1.06% and average credit card debt per borrower of $5,389 during the fourth quarter over a 10-year period starting in 2003.

"The fourth quarter traditionally results in higher credit card balances and delinquencies, much of it to do with the holiday shopping season," Ezra Becker, vice president of research and consulting in TransUnion's financial services business unit, said in a press release. "Both credit card delinquencies and balances are below historic norms."

Borrowers in Alaska ($7,012), Connecticut ($5,820) and Colorado ($5,792) carried the highest credit card debt in the nation in the fourth quarter, while borrowers in Iowa ($4,048), North Dakota ($4,179), and South Dakota ($4,303) had the lowest debt.

The share of borrowers whose loans were at least 90 days past due ticked up the most from a year earlier in Alaska, where the ratio increased to 0.63% from 0.41%; Massachusetts, where it rose to 0.87% from 0.67%; and New Hampshire, where it grew to 0.83% from 0.67%.

Serous delinquencies fell the most in Oregon, to 0.60% from 0.69%; Idaho, to 0.70% from 0.78%; and Montana, to 0.53% from 0.58%.

Nationwide, delinquency rates rose in the fourth quarter from a year earlier in 39 states and Washington, D.C., fell in nine states and remained unchanged in two states.

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend, "Doug" (24), and I (22) have been in a long-distance relationship for a year, but we were friends for a couple of years before that. I had never had a serious relationship before and lacked experience. Doug has not only been in two other long-term relationships, but has had sex with more than 15 women. One of them is an amateur porn actress.I knew about this, but it didn't bother me until recently. Doug had a party, and while he was drunk he told one of his buddies -- in front of me -- that he should watch a certain porn film starring his ex-girlfriend. ...

Church Heath Center Wellness is a Gym for the Rest of Us

Going to the gym (at least, going to a lot of gyms) can be kind of intimidating.

Every time I went to the gym on my college campus, it was always full of fit, tan, muscular people who didn't look like they needed to be there. It was so intimidating that I only went once, perferring to banish myself to the older, smaller gym at the other end of campus, the one where the normals worked out.

When I joined the Church Health Center Wellness center after I moved back to Memphis, one of the first things that made me love it (other than the sliding scale price) was that it was a brand new, beautiful workout facility full of very normal looking, very friendly people.

CHC-Wellness

That's really one of the things that sets CHC Wellness apart ? there are no mirrors, there's a strict dress code, and the staff works with new members to set workout plans that are healthy and doable.

CHC Wellness employee Colli Bounds puts it like this: "There are people of all different body types here. You never feel like the only fat kid working out with fitness models. Everyone is super supportive, and the regulars get to know you and check up on you.

Bounds and her office mate Sonia Taylor have been exercising together daily at CHC Wellness since October 2011. "It's easier to work out together," Tayor said. "It keeps us accountable." Bounds agrees, joking that "there are days when I don't want to work out, but Sonia is right there with the guilt trips."

CHC Wellness is run by Church Health Center, a Memphis non-profit that provides healthcare to the city's working uninsured. It's a gym, but it's way more than that. It's also a community center, place to take group classes (like yoga, zumba or cooking), pool and basketball court. And just like Church Health Center insurance, Wellness membership prices are based on individual income.?

Searching for the solar system's chemical recipe

Feb. 20, 2013 ? By studying the origins of different isotope ratios among the elements that make up today's smorgasbord of planets, moons, comets, asteroids, and interplanetary ice and dust, Mark Thiemens and his colleagues hope to learn how our solar system evolved. Thiemens, Dean of the Division of Physical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, has worked on this problem for over three decades.

In recent years his team has found the Chemical Dynamics Beamline of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) to be an invaluable tool for examining how photochemistry determines the basic ingredients in the solar system recipe.

"Mark and his colleagues Subrata Chakraborty and Teresa Jackson wanted to know if photochemistry could explain some of the differences in isotope ratios between Earth and what's found in meteorites and interplanetary dust particles," says Musahid (Musa) Ahmed of Berkeley Lab's Chemical Sciences Division, a scientist at the Chemical Dynamics Beamline who works with the UC San Diego team. "They needed a source of ultraviolet light powerful enough to dissociate gas molecules like carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and nitrogen. That's us: our beamline basically provides information about gas-phase photodynamics."

Beamline 9.0.2, the Chemical Dynamics Beamline, generates intense beams of VUV -- vacuum ultraviolet light in the 40 to 165-nanometer wavelength range (a nanometer is a billionth of a meter)- which can be precisely tuned to mimic radiation from the protosun when the solar system was forming.

Oxygen and sulfur are the third and tenth most abundant elements in the solar system and two of the most important for life. Their isotopic differences from Earth's are clearly seen in many different kinds of meteorites. Thiemens's team first used beamline 9.0.2 in 2008 to test a theory, called "self-shielding," about why oxygen-16 is less prevalent in these relics of the primitive solar system than it is in the sun, which contains 99.8 percent of all the mass in the solar system. To their surprise, the experimental results showed that self-shielding could not resolve the oxygen-isotope puzzle.

More recently Thiemens's group used beamline 9.0.2 to perform the first VUV experiments on sulfur, using the results to build a model of chemical evolution in the primitive solar nebula that could yield the isotopic ratios of sulfur seen in meteorites. They report their findings in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Mass versus chemistry

Oxygen is the most abundant element on Earth, present in air, water, and rocks; 99.762 percent of it is the isotope oxygen-16, with eight protons and eight neutrons. Oxygen-18 has two additional neutrons and accounts for another two-tenths of a percent; oxygen-17, with one extra neutron, provides the last smidgen, less than four-hundredths of a percent.

Sulfur, with four stable isotopes, is less abundant but essential to life. Sulfur-32 accounts for 95.02 percent, sulfur?34 4.21 percent, sulfur-33 0.75 percent, and sulfur-36's mere 0.02 percent brings up the rear.

Ahmed explains the two basic kinds of processes that account for these ratios. "One depends on the mass of the isotopes themselves," he says. "Oxygen-18 is two neutrons heavier than oxygen-16. One effect of this, although not the only one, is that when the temperature rises, oxygen-16 evaporates faster. And when the temperature falls, oxygen-18 condenses faster."

Changes in temperature and other physical factors can thus produce different isotope ratios -- that's why there's a greater proportion of oxygen-18 in raindrops than in the clouds they fall from, for example.

Isotope-ratio researchers commonly graph these processes by plotting samples with increasing proportions of oxygen-18 relative to oxygen-16 along the Y axis; the X axis shows increasing proportions of oxygen-17 to oxygen-16. When comparing these three isotopes in almost any sample from Earth to an arbitrary standard called SMOW (standard mean ocean water), the proportions of the three always diverge at a rate that can be plotted along a line with a distinctive slope: about one-half.

Samples whose isotope ratios don't fall on the slope-one-half line didn't result from mass-dependent processes. In 1973 the ratios of oxygen isotopes in carbonaceous meteorites, the oldest objects in the solar system, were found to vary significantly from those on Earth. Their graph line had a slope close to one. A decade later Thiemens and John Heidenreich found that ozone, the three-atom molecule of oxygen, showed a similar isotope trend, with a similar slope of one -- a relationship that was at least partly due to the molecule's chemical formation.

Sulfur isotope ratios are plotted in a similar way; the standard is an iron sulfide mineral called Diablo Canyon Troilite -- not native to Earth, however, but found in a fragment of the meteorite that created Arizona's Meteor Crater.

"Mass-independent processes suggest chemical reactions, whether in the lab, the stratosphere, or the early solar system," says Ahmed. "In the proto-solar system, bathed in intense ultraviolet light, these might have occurred on a grain of rock or ice or dust, or in just plain gas. The goal is to identify distinctive isotopic fractionations and examine the chemical pathways that could have produced them."

In the beginning

Since Thiemens's early work with ozone 30 years ago, his UC San Diego laboratory has perfected methods of recovering primordial samples from dust, meteorites, and the solar wind. Thiemens and Chakraborty were members of the science team for NASA's Genesis mission, and Chakraborty was able to extract mere billionths of a gram of oxygen from particles of the solar wind even after the spacecraft's collectors were badly damaged when they crashed upon return to Earth.

Like oxygen, sulfur isotopes show up in different fractions in different solar system sources. Tracing their possible origins, the recent study of sulfur isotopes at beamline 9.0.2 began by flowing hydrogen sulfide gas -- the most abundant sulfur-bearing gas in the early solar system -- into a pressurized reaction chamber, where the synchrotron beam decomposed the gas and deposited elemental sulfur on "jackets" made of ultraclean aluminum foil.

The experiment was performed at four different VUV wavelengths, and the carefully stored aluminum jackets were taken to the Thiemens lab in San Diego, where Chakraborty and Jackson chemically extracted the sulfur and then measured its isotopes using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry. In all samples the isotope compositions were found to be mass independent.

One source of fractionation in nature was photodissociation of hydrogen sulfide as the gas condensed to iron sulfide in the inner solar system, driven by intense 121.6-nanometer-wavelength ultraviolet light as the young star repeatedly shook with violent flares and upheavals. Different classes of meteorites -- and different parts of the same meteorites, such as their crust or various inclusions -- subsequently evolved different isotope ratios, depending on where and when in the solar system they formed. Sulfur compositions evolved independently from the way oxygen isotope compositions evolved.

The most recent target of research by the Thiemens group at beamline 9.0.2 is nitrogen, the seventh most abundant element in the solar system. On Earth, 99.63 of nitrogen is nitrogen-14, and nitrogen-15 is the remaining 0.37 percent. Measurements of the solar wind, carbonaceous meteorites, and other sources show wide swings in their proportions. The work is ongoing.

Says Musa Ahmed, "Tracking down how isotopic ratios may have evolved, we basically send these elements back in time. The more we learn about the fundamental elements of the solar system at the Chemical Dynamics Beamline, the more it's like really being out there when the solar system began."

This work was funded by NASA's Origins and Cosmochemistry programs. The Advanced Light Source is supported by DOE's Office of Science.

10-Year-Old Florida Boy Found Drunk and Naked After Mother Gives him Brandy

A 10-year-old boy in Florida was found drunk and naked in his neighborhood after his mother gave him a bottle of brandy to drink.

Neighbor Amanda Roesch found the boy and brought him back to his mother?s.

?He couldn?t even stand,? Roesch said. ?He was just, you know, naked and I?m like, ?Come in the house, baby,? - and I went and got some of my son?s clothes.?

When the boy began talking, he told her that his mother had a drinking problem.

?This little boy, he said, ?All I want for my mommy is to go to rehab and to get anger management because mommy drinks to feel better cause she?s mad,?? Roesch said. ?He?s 10. Really? He had to take care of mom. How do you not know your child is naked drunk and missing, wandering down a dark road in the cold? I just don?t understand.?

?He was so drunk that he didn?t realize he had no clothes on.?

Authorities said his mother, Nedra Byrd, was drunk and passed out on the couch when they arrived. She said she thought her son was inside his room and told officers she was ?drunk as hell.?

While it is unclear whether Byrd is the boy?s actual mother, he was under her care and he referred to her as his mom.

Byrd was arrested and charged with one count of child abuse.

They discovered a half-empty bottle of Christian Brother?s brandy that the boy said Byrd gave him. He said he had also tried alcohol before.

He was examined at a hospital where doctors did a blood alcohol test.

?They went ahead and did a blood alcohol which came out to .108, which in an adult would be considered impaired driving at .08,? sheriff?s office spokeswoman Denise Moloney said.

The boy is now in the custody of Florida Department of Children and Families.

Byrd was released Friday on $1,000 bond.

iPhone and iPod Rechargeable Travel Speakers: Altec Lansing iMT630 and iHome iDM12

Travel should not hinder you from enjoying your choice of music from your iPhone or iPod at its finest level. For any reason, whether you are on a business trip, on a family holiday, or simply for an R&R, there will be times when it feels great to escape for a while and enjoy music on your iPhone by yourself or with some intimate friends. For this purpose here are two of the best travel speakers for iPhone which are compact, rechargeable, and could fit in your backback.

Altec Lansing iMT630

Altec Lansing's latest addition to its travel speaker product line, the iMT630 brings out the best sound among the others in it group. With a length of 310 mm and a height of 135mm, it may look bulky, but it could still fit snugly in a travel bag or backpack since it is only 35mm thick. Its weight is not an issue either for it only weighs 425g.

It features a retractable dock to hold the iPhone or iPod plus an auxiliary input socket to accommodate another audio player. The sound produced is loud enough to liven up a room or enough to be heard crisp and clear by a small group of people. However, it may not satisfy those who wish to feel the pounding of the heavy drum and bass tracks.

The built-in rechargeable battery for the iMT630 can last for up to seven hours, so it would accompany you through the night while partying at the beach or while enjoying your barbecue afternoon gathering.

iHome iDM12

The iHome iDM12 is a compact speaker with a big sound. Measuring only 180mm long, it could easily fit in a large pocket and can be carried anywhere. Perhaps because of its size, it is designed without a dock. Bluetooth is used for streaming music from the iPad, iPhone, iPod, or practically eny device that has a bluetooth streaming function.

The battery life can last up to eight hours. An auxiliary input is also available; however, its charging and audio cable is specially provided by iHome and is not a standard cable.

For its size and weight, the sound quality is loud and clear. It boasts of a special feature to amplify the bass sound thru its 5RS TruBass. Turning this feature on may make the speaker vibrate more than needed, thus, you may have to turn down the volume a bit should this function be used.

For those who want a small speaker with a big sound, this is a good choice.

Both speakers have their own exceptional qualities. Choose the one which fits your lifestyle and needs best.

Brecon Beacons win dark sky status

The night sky above the Brecon Beacons National Park has been granted special protection.

It has become Wales' first and only the fifth destination in the world to be granted the status of an international dark sky reserve.

The park society and the national park authority began their bid in 2011.

Jim Wilson, Chair of Brecon Beacons Park Society, said it recognised the area as one of the best places in Europe "to truly see dark skies".

The park joins Mont Megantic in Quebec, Canada; Exmoor National Park in south west England; Aoraki Mackenzie in New Zealand; and NambiRand Nature Reserve in Namibia with the status.

The status means the night-sky is protected and lighting controls are in place to prevent light pollution.

The national park said it already possessed some of the UK's darkest skies, which was ideal for stargazing.

Switching off

Officials claimed that on a clear night above the Beacons people could see the Milky Way, as well as numerous constellations, bright nebulas and even meteor showers.

Julia James, chair of Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, said attaining the status was a massive boost for the entire area.

She said it would bring many environmental, wildlife, economic, tourism and wellbeing benefits.

To get through the application process local astronomers conducted a survey to assess the levels of light pollution, and lighting engineers audited the existing external lighting in the national park.

Information leaflets and letters were distributed to residents living in the 'core zone' to help them understand the simple measures they could take, such as tilting outdoor security lights downwards instead of up, that could make difference to how dark the night sky appears.

Local communities supported the bid, with residents in Talybont-on-Usk holding their own Star Party and organising a community light switch off.

Martin Morgan-Taylor, board member of the International Dark-Sky Association, the US based organisation which awards the status, said the gradual loss of the view of the night sky was a loss of part of culture.

"Whilst no-one wants all the lights to be switched off, we can improve the lighting we use in towns and cities.

"However, the best views of the night sky come from places such as the Brecon Beacons, who have dedicated themselves to protecting and restoring the night sky for all to enjoy."

Jim Wilson, chairman of Brecon Beacons Park Society, thanked all those who had taken part in the project, saying it recognised the park as one of the best places in Europe to see truly dark skies.

Environment Minister John Griffiths called the accreditation a "massive coup".

He said: "It shows the level of commitment here in Wales to tackling climate change and improving peoples' physical, spiritual and mental well-being."

U.S. ready to strike back against China cyberattacks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As public evidence mounts that the Chinese military is responsible for stealing massive amounts of U.S. government data and corporate trade secrets, the Obama administration is eyeing fines and other trade actions it may take against Beijing or any other country guilty of cyberespionage.

According to officials familiar with the plans, the White House will lay out a new report Wednesday that suggests initial, more-aggressive steps the U.S. would take in response to what top authorities say has been an unrelenting campaign of cyberstealing linked to the Chinese government. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the threatened action.

The White House plans come after a Virginia-based cybersecurity firm released a torrent of details Monday that tied a secret Chinese military unit in Shanghai to years of cyberattacks against U.S. companies. After analyzing breaches that compromised more than 140 companies, Mandiant has concluded that they can be linked People's Liberation Army's Unit 61398.

Military experts believe the unit is part of the People's Liberation Army's cyber-command, which is under the direct authority of the General Staff Department, China's version of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As such, its activities would be likely to be authorized at the highest levels of China's military.

The release of Mandiant's report, complete with details on three of the alleged hackers and photographs of one of the military unit's buildings in Shanghai, makes public what U.S. authorities have said less publicly for years. But it also increases the pressure on the U.S. to take more forceful action against the Chinese for what experts say has been years of systematic espionage.

"If the Chinese government flew planes into our airspace, our planes would escort them away. If it happened two, three or four times, the president would be on the phone and there would be threats of retaliation," said former FBI executive assistant director Shawn Henry. "This is happening thousands of times a day. There needs to be some definition of where the red line is and what the repercussions would be."

Henry, now president of the security firm CrowdStrike, said that rather than tell companies to increase their cybersecurity the government needs to focus more on how to deter the hackers and the nations that are backing them.

James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said that in the past year the White House has been taking a serious look at responding to China, adding that "this will be the year they will put more pressure on, even while realizing it will be hard for the Chinese to change. There's not an on-off switch."

The Chinese government, meanwhile, has denied involvement in the cyber-attacks tracked by Mandiant. Instead, the Foreign Ministry said that China, too, is a victim of hacking, some of it traced to the U.S. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei cited a report by an agency under the Ministry of Information Technology and Industry that said in 2012 alone that foreign hackers used viruses and other malicious software to seize control of 1,400 computers in China and 38,000 websites.

"Among the above attacks, those from the U.S. numbered the most," Hong said at a daily media briefing, lodging the most specific allegations the Chinese government has made about foreign hacking.

Cybersecurity experts say U.S. authorities do not conduct similar attacks or steal data from Chinese companies, but acknowledge that intelligence agencies routinely spy on other countries.

China is clearly a target of interest, said Lewis, noting that the U.S. would be interested in Beijing's military policies, such as any plans for action against Taiwan or Japan.

In its report, Mandiant said it traced the hacking back to a neighborhood in the outskirts of Shanghai that includes a white 12-story office building run by the PLA's Unit 61398.

Mandiant said there are only two viable conclusions about the involvement of the Chinese military in the cyberattacks: Either Unit 61398 is responsible for the persistent attacks or they are being done by a secret organization of Chinese speakers with direct access to the Shanghai telecommunications infrastructure who are engaged in a multi-year espionage campaign being run right outside the military unit's gates.

"In a state that rigorously monitors Internet use, it is highly unlikely that the Chinese government is unaware of an attack group that operates from the Pudong New Area of Shanghai," the Mandiant report said, concluding that the only way the group could function is with the "full knowledge and cooperation" of the Beijing government.

The unit "has systematically stolen hundreds of terabytes of data from at least 141 organizations," Mandiant wrote. A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes. The most popular version of the new iPhone 5, for example, has 16 gigabytes of space, while the more expensive iPads have as much as 64 gigabytes of space. The U.S. Library of Congress' 2006-2010 Twitter archive of about 170 billion tweets totals 133.2 terabytes.

"At some point we do have to call the Chinese out on this," said Michael Chertoff, Homeland Security secretary under President George W. Bush and now chairman of the Chertoff Group, a global security firm. "Simply rolling over and averting our eyes, I don't think is a long-term strategy."

Richard Bejtlich, the chief security officer at Mandiant, said the company decided to make its report public in part to help send a message to both the Chinese and U.S. governments.

"At the government level, I see this as a tool that they can use to have discussions with the Chinese, with allies, with others who are concerned about this problem and have an open dialogue without having to worry about sensitivities around disclosing classified information," Bejtlich said. "This problem is overclassified."

He said the release of an unclassified report that provides detailed evidence will allow authorities to have an open discussion about what to do.

Mandiant's report is filled with high-tech details and juicy nuggets that led to its conclusion, including the code names of some of the hackers, like Ugly Gorilla, Dota and SuperHard, and that Dota appears to be a fan of Harry Potter because references to the book and movie character appear as answers to his computer security questions.

The White House would not comment on the report expected Wednesday.

"We have repeatedly raised our concerns at the highest levels about cybertheft with senior Chinese officials, including in the military, and we will continue to do so," said Caitlin Hayden, spokeswoman for the National Security Council. "The United States and China are among the world's largest cyber actors, and it is vital that we continue a sustained, meaningful dialogue and work together to develop an understanding of acceptable behavior in cyberspace."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the report reinforces the need for international agreements that prohibit cybercrimes and have a workable enforcement mechanism.

After A Rough 2012, HTC Fires Back At Smartphone Rivals With The HTC One

htc-one2There's little question that HTC wishes 2012 had gone just a little better -- the beleaguered smartphone company posted awfully disappointing results quarter after quarter, while rivals like Samsung and Apple continued to hit milestone after milestone. CEO Peter Chou firmly believes that the worst is over though, and that the company he helms can truly turn its fortunes around. Now, here in New York (as well as at a parallel event in London), HTC has just introduced the device it hopes will help do all that -- the HTC One.

Michael Jordan turns 50; why NBA fans have to finally move on

?He?s good?but he?ll never be Michael Jordan??

?It?s amazing what he?s doing?but is he Michael Jordan??

Those two lines were uttered on two separate occasions about two separate NBA stars; the first about Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant and the other about the Miami Heat?s Lebron James. Arguably the two biggest NBA icons of the post-Jordan era, these two men have had to bear the brunt of being ?not Michael Jordan? for the entirety of their careers?no doubt a heavy (and frustrating) cross to bear.

Jordan, the NBA?s greatest player, turns 50 today. And his shadow still looms large over the league that he helped turn into a global phenomenon. And it?s understandable?there was no player more charismatic, seemingly unstoppable and more hell-bent on winning than Michael Jeffrey Jordan in his prime. He came in the league determined to outshine his contemporaries?whether it was Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, who were winning championships before his teams got to the elite level; or Patrick Ewing and Charles Barkley, who he routinely kept from every ascending to the top of the mountain. His jaw-dropping moves and game winning shots are forever etched in the memories of anyone old enough to have witnessed them. And honestly, maybe even many who aren?t old enough to have seen them firsthand.

It can?t be ignored that he?s also the most mass-marketed athlete ever. People who didn?t know much about the NBA knew Michael Jordan. He became a pop culture figure in a way that, say, Magic Johnson never did. Magic won five championships?but he never hosted ?Saturday Night Live.?

But for all of the love and admiration the basketball world still has for No. 23; it?s gradually turned into an obsession?one that is robbing fans of their ability to appreciate the greatness of the players that have emerged in the aftermath of his career.

Since Jordan?s first retirement in 1993, basketball fans have pined for the ?Next Jordan.? From Penny Hardaway and Harold Miner, to Grant Hill, Bryant, Vince Carter and James?a bevy of superstars have come and gone having to bear the mark of being the ?Air Apparent.? But, in the case of Bryant and James, in particular?two surefire Hall of Famers and all-time greats?its insulting to what they?ve been able to do during their careers.

Bryant is one of the most focused players in the game, an offensive whiz who?s added a variety of weapons to repertoire over the years. After a whopping 17 years in the league, he has five championships to his credit. He?s gone on record-breaking scoring binges, is the all-time leading All-Star Game scorer and has posted the most points in an NBA game since Wilt Chamberlain. James is a physical rarity?a basketball player with the build of a power forward, the court vision of a point guard, and athleticism like we?ve never seen. He?s won a championship with the Miami Heat and has just gone on an unprecedented run where he scored at least 30 points while shooting at least 60 percent from the field for six straight games.

Bryant has played 17 straight years and is still a top-five scorer in the league. Jordan played 13 with the Bulls?and took a year and a half off to play baseball in the mid-90s. James fills up the stat sheet like no one before him?including MJ. Yet both men have to routinely contend with ?Is he the next Jordan?? chatter.

Kobe and Lebron both paired with superstars to win their championships. Kobe played second fiddle to Shaquille O?Neal on his first three championship teams, then? teamed with Pau Gasol for his next two. Lebron has Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. Because Michael Jordan only played with one teammate for all six championships that was HOF-caliber (Scottie Pippen), fans use this to dismiss Bryant and James? greatness.

?They aren?t MJ.?

But virtually every great player not named Michael Jordan had uber-talented teams around them. Jerry West played with guys like Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor. Dr. J had Moses Malone, Andrew Toney and Maurice Cheeks. Bill Russell?s teams were stocked with Hall of Famers. Magic Johnson played with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Bob McAdoo. Larry Bird played with Kevin McHale, Robert Parish and Dennis Johnson.

Everyone can?t be judged by ?The Jordan Standard.? And we don?t use that standard to dismiss those who played before Jordan?s Bulls took over the NBA. Its unfair to constantly use it to discredit those who have won after.

Michael Jordan is an icon. The fact that he?s still held in such high regard a generation after winning his last championship speaks volumes. For people of a certain age, the image of him in that red and black uniform largely defines the NBA; and along with Bird and Johnson, he epitomizes the league?s greatest era.

But it?s time to let go; time to judge the greats of the 2000s on their own merits. Whether it be a 17-year veteran in Los Angeles still playing great in the twilight of his career or a physical marvel in Miami that?s doing things on a basketball court the world has never seen. Let the specter of Michael Jordan?s career finally rest in peace.

And embrace the greatness we see before us everyday.

Rihanna's London Fashion Week debut met with mixed reviews

Rihanna made her fashion designer debut over the weekend, when the collection she designed for British retailer River Island was shown at London Fashion Week.

The presentation, which began an hour late, was held inside a former London post office, with models posing on a five-tiered platform. The "Diamonds" singer made a brief appearance at the end.

Rihanna

Her collection, featuring crop tops, high-slit skirts and short shorts, was met with mixed reviews -- one critic went as far as to call it "hideous" and a "horror show."

Here's what that reviewer, and a few others, had to say:

The Daily Beast: "Rihanna's collection for River Island as brought forth in London tonight was a horror show. The clothes were hideous and without an ounce of panache or style between them...For example, if you really, really like belly buttons, if you are totally nuts for navels, then this could be the collection for you. If you only feel capable of wearing clothes on the lower half of your body if they are slashed up to your waist, then again, you are in luck."

Womens Wear Daily: "The looks were all variations on things from her wardrobe, ranging from the fleshy -- tight crop tops and long skirts slit to high heaven -- to the streetwise and boyish, as in hooded jumpsuits, to the bare and Barbadian-influenced look of floral prints shown on bra tops and shorts. None of it looked expensive, but if Rihanna's see-if-I-care attitude is a free gift with purchase, the collection should do fine."

Refinery 29: "Even if we didn't know that this was RiRi's collection, we would have guessed. Her style DNA was infused into every stitch of the fabric. From the thigh-high-split maxi dresses and not-for-the-faint-hearted mesh vests to the '90s-inspired crop tops and matching short shorts, the looks could only have been designed by this woman."

New York magazine: "Suffice it to say the designs will sell like high street hot cakes -- she's Rihanna, after all. In neons, florals, and washed-out tie dye prints, the skimpy separates were a little more tropical than the average British summertime, but hey, we'll take any sunshine we can get. Jumpsuits, swimsuits, bandeau tops and asymmetric maxi dresses are in, says Rihanna, as are midriffs. Also recurring: leather baseball jackets, thigh-high skirt slits, hoop earrings, and hair bows."

Rihanna's collection for River Island is shown at London Fashion Week on Feb. 16, 2013, in London.

Nano-machines for 'bionic proteins'

Feb. 15, 2013 ? Physicists of the University of Vienna together with researchers from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna developed nano-machines which recreate principal activities of proteins. They present the first versatile and modular example of a fully artificial protein-mimetic model system, thanks to the Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC), a high performance computing infrastructure. These "bionic proteins" could play an important role in innovating pharmaceutical research.

Proteins are the fundamental building blocks of all living organism we currently know. Because of the large number and complexity of bio-molecular processes they are capable of, proteins are often referred to as "molecular machines." Take for instance the proteins in your muscles: At each contraction stimulated by the brain, an uncountable number of proteins change their structures to create the collective motion of the contraction. This extraordinary process is performed by molecules which have a size of only about a nanometer, a billionth of a meter.

Muscle contraction is just one of the numerous activities of proteins: There are proteins that transport cargo in the cells, proteins that construct other proteins, there are even cages in which proteins that "mis-behave" can be trapped for correction, and the list goes on and on. "Imitating these astonishing bio-mechanical properties of proteins and transferring them to a fully artificial system is our long term objective," says Ivan Coluzza from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Vienna, who works on this project together with colleagues of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna.

Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC)

In a recent paper in Physical Review Letters, the team presented the first example of a fully artificial bio-mimetic model system capable of spontaneously self-knotting into a target structure. Using computer simulations, they reverse engineered proteins by focusing on the key elements that give them the ability to execute the program written in the genetic code. The computationally very intensive simulations have been made possible by access to the powerful Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC), a high performance computing infrastructure operated jointly by the University of Vienna, the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna.

Artificial proteins in the laboratory

The team now works on realizing such artificial proteins in the laboratory using specially functionalized nanoparticles. The particles will then be connected into chains following the sequence determined by the computer simulations, such that the artificial proteins fold into the desired shapes. Such knotted nanostructures could be used as new stable drug delivery vehicles and as enzyme-like, but more stable, catalysts.

This project was supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) within the SFB "Vienna Computational Materials Laboratory" (ViCoM).

Microsoft Publishes Linux GPU Frame-Buffer Driver

Microsoft's Linux kernel contributions continue... This time around they have published a synthetic frame-buffer driver.

For exposing a kernel frame-buffer on guests when running Linux atop Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization platform, Microsoft has published an initial patch that provides Hyper-V Synthetic Video support. This kernel frame-buffer driver supports Microsoft's virtual Synthetic Video device.

Haiyang Zhang, the Microsoft engineer responsible for this new Microsoft Linux driver, wrote on the kernel mailing list, "This is the driver for the Hyper-V Synthetic Video, which supports screen resolution up to Full HD 1920x1080 on Windows Server 2012 host, and 1600x1200 on Windows Server 2008 R2 or earlier. It also solves the double mouse cursor issue of the emulated video mode."

This Microsoft Synthetic Video Driver is currently under a "request for comments" state but it's possible if the review goes well it could be potentially merged for the forthcoming Linux 3.9 kernel development cycle otherwise Linux 3.10.

Self Help Tips For Creating Positive Change

When it comes to the subject of personal development, you want to learn all there is to learn about how to grow as an individual. Your personality is an important tool for your success, but you will also have to do a lot of studying.

Use your strengths and patience to make difficult changes. Everybody has different skills, which makes the diverse and wonderful planet we live on. Concentrate on good skills you already have rather than worry about talents you would like to acquire.

TIP! Understand what you want from your life. Following through is the next step.

Start organizing your life. Getting organized is an accomplishment, and continually staying organized boosts your confidence. Doing this will also relieve you of the stress you felt when things were disorderly. Being able to find whatever you are looking for is an amazing feeling.

Compose a pep talk for yourself. Write a list of each of your good points and attributes on an index card. Carry it with you, and refer to it when necessary. Better yet, read the list out loud while recording yourself. For what reason?

Shop to provide yourself with necessities, not as a form of entertainment. As part of your self improvement, clean up your financial matters. Eliminate unnecessary expenses.

TIP! Exercising, and taking care of your physical self are important aspects of the personal development process. Keep yourself energized by eating right, sleeping soundly, and exercising every day so that you will have the best chance of achieving your goals.

Try and surround yourself with people who think like you do. This will create a reinforcing environment for meeting your goals and also help you avoid people who will bring you down with constant criticism.

There?s an idea of the ?Law of Threes,? which means that anything, good or bad, that you do to other people will return to you threefold. Look at other people and wish for them, the very best. If you try to remain positive in all aspects of your life, you will not be as likely to get dragged down by sadness, anger and other negative feelings.

Learn things that people that are successful are doing; use them in your own life. Pick a few basic ones at first, then practice them steadily until you do them without thinking. Experts suggest that it takes three weeks to form a new habit, so persevere and you will change your ways.

TIP! Come up with a little pep talk for yourself. Keep a list of your good qualities in your wallet.

Focus on the things you want, create a plan to get them, and keep the following things in mind. It is important to play an active role in your own life story, instead of just watching it pass by. Observing instead of doing causes you to appear dead to most of the world.

Make sure you have accessible goals, and then work to accomplish them. Everybody has a weakness, but if you discover what yours are and then strive to banish them, that makes you the better person.

Give your energy to the things that are most important in your life. By devoting your attention to what is most important, and ignoring all the negative distractions, you will be able to find serenity and happiness.

TIP! The goals that you have set in your personal development plan should be clearly defined to show the steps toward achievement of success. By having specific goals in place, you will be able to set up a plan to accomplish them.

You may find it helpful to discuss your issues with a counselor or other trusted professional, such as your pastor. These types of individuals are trained to help you deal with your problems in a healthy way. You will find that they are eager to hear what you have to say and assess your situation in such a way that will further your personal growth. Getting your problems out in the open with a professional should give you a much healthier outlook on your own life.

Learning to react selflessly is a sign of progress in the path of self improvement. If you understand the importance of caring for others at your own expense, you can build stronger character. Caring for the ill and feeding the hungry can help you become a more empathetic, loving person.

By taking all of the knowledge you?ve just learned from this article into account, you should now have a good understanding of what you should do next to achieve your personal development goals. Always keep your eyes peeled for new ideas that will help you grow into a better person who is more productive and relaxed.

PFT: Goodell reportedly made nearly $30M in '11

TavonAP

Former Jets quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh admits that QB Tim Tebow wasn?t used ?as much as we should have, probably.?

A pair of Bills season-ticket holders had a Bills-themed wedding.? (The party was crashed by a Giants fan.? Then a Redskins fan.? Then two Cowboys fans.)

Mel Kiper thinks that the Patriots should add WR Tavon Austin to replace Wes Welker, if Welker is allowed to walk.? (And we realize that we lost at least 49.6 percent of you at ?Mel Kiper thinks.?)

The Dolphins have signed CFL LB Lee Robinson.

Ravens RB Ray Rice hopes and prays the team will find a way to keep FB Vonta Leach.

Bengals offensive line coach Paul Alexander will attend Competition Committee meetings in Indy to discuss chop blocks and holding.

Steelers minority owner Rita M. McGinley, 94, died on Friday.

The Browns? official website has weighed in on the question of whether owner Jimmy Haslam will be less involved in the team now that he is working in Tennessee again.? (And since it?s the Browns? official website, you really don?t need to read it to know the bottom line.)

Texans G.M. Rick Smith will receive the Charlie Ward Tribute to Excellence Award on Saturday night.

Jaguars defensive coordinator Bob Babich will use a 4-3 defense with some 3-4 elements.

The Colts have only eight players on the roster from their Super Bowl XLIV team; three of them will become free agents.

Steve Hoffman, a 23-year NFL assistant, will serve as assistant special-teams coordinator with the Titans.

One of the age-discrimination lawsuits pending against the Chiefs has gone to trial.

Broncos LB Joe Mays, lost for the season in Week Eight with an ankle injury, hopes to be ready to go for the start of OTAs.

So what can the Chargers learn from the Ravens?

The all-time Raiders interception list is led by the guy who draped himself in Stickum, at a time when it was socially acceptable to do so.

Giants RB Andre Brown is preparing to be the starter.

The Redskins will have to adjust their asinine ?70 high schools? argument to 69.? (Shut up, Beavis.)

The Cowboys trust Bill Callahan (enough not to sabotage a Super Bowl . . . if they ever get there again).

Eagles coach Chip Kelly likes the continuity that tight ends coach Ted Williams, who has been with the team since 1995,? brings to the table.? (Or maybe Kelly was enamored with the idea of giving employment to a frozen head.)

Several Packers greats will be signing autographs this weekend at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa.

The Bears? new offense will reflect a compilation of multiple systems.? (Is ?compilation? the FCC-approved alternative to ?clusterf?k??)

The Lions won?t raise ticket prices for 2013.

The Vikings? sixth-round pick won?t go to Washington because QB Donovan McNabb didn?t play enough in 2011 to satisfy the play-time threshold that would have sweetened a sour deal.

Panthers LB Luke Kuechly is slightly more inconspicuous at Boston College than QB Cam Newton is at Auburn.

The Buccaneers have a huge advantage over the rest of the NFC South when it comes to cap space.

Saints QB Drew Brees may have let the cat out of the bag regarding the return of WrestleMania to the Superdome.

It?s unlikely that the Falcons? ?give us a new stadium or we?ll move . . . to the suburbs? tactic will get anyone worked up.

With the Cardinals projected at more than $3 million over the cap, G.M. Steve Keim knows some tough decisions are coming.

Was the Seahawks defense in 2012 the best in franchise history?

49ers LB Aldon Smith has added MMA training to his offseason repertoire.

The Rams are accepting applications for the fifth Annual Playground Build/Community Improvement Project.? (At least Titus Young will have someplace to hang out.)
