Syria warns of "surprise" response to Israel attack

BEIRUT/AMMAN (Reuters) - Syria warned on Thursday of a possible "surprise" response to Israel's attack on its territory and Russia condemned the air strike as an unprovoked violation of international law.

Damascus could take "a surprise decision to respond to the aggression of the Israeli warplanes", Syrian ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul-Karim Ali said a day after Israel struck against Syria.

"Syria is engaged in defending its sovereignty and its land," Ali told a website of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Syria and Israel have fought several wars and in 2007 Israeli jets bombed a suspected Syrian nuclear site, without a military response from Damascus.

Diplomats, Syrian rebels and regional security sources said on Wednesday that Israeli jets had bombed a convoy near the Lebanese border, apparently hitting weapons destined for Hezbollah. Syria denied the reports, saying the target had been a military research center northwest of Damascus.

Hezbollah, which has supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as he battles an armed uprising in which 60,000 people have been killed, said Israel was trying to thwart Arab military power and vowed to stand by its ally.

"Hezbollah expresses its full solidarity with Syria's leadership, army and people," said the group which fought an inconclusive 34-day war with Israel in 2006.

Israel has remained silent on the attack and there has been little reaction from its Western backers, but Syria's allies in Moscow and Tehran were quick to denounce the strike.

Russia, which has blocked Western efforts to put pressure on Syria at the United Nations, said that any Israeli air strike would amount to unacceptable military interference.

"If this information is confirmed, then we are dealing with unprovoked attacks on targets on the territory of a sovereign country, which blatantly violates the U.N. Charter and is unacceptable, no matter the motives to justify it," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Iranian deputy foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian said the attack "demonstrates the shared goals of terrorists and the Zionist regime", Fars news agency reported. Assad portrays the rebels fighting him as foreign-backed, Islamist terrorists, with the same agenda as Israel.

"It is necessary for the sides which take tough stances on Syria to now take serious steps and decisive stances against this aggression by Tel Aviv and uphold criteria for security in the region," Abdullahian said.

An aide to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday that Iran would consider any attack on Syria as an attack on itself, but Abdullahian made no mention of retaliation.

Hezbollah said the attack showed that the conflict in Syria was part of a scheme "to destroy Syria and its army and foil its pivotal role in the resistance front (against Israel)".

BLASTS SHOOK DISTRICT

Details of Wednesday's strike remain sketchy and, in parts, contradictory. Syria said Israeli warplanes, flying low to avoid detection by radar, crossed into its airspace from Lebanon and struck the Jamraya military research centre.

But the diplomats and rebels said the jets hit a weapons convoy heading from Syria to Lebanon, apparently destined for Assad's ally Hezbollah, and the rebels said they - not Israel - hit Jamraya with mortars.

The force of the dawn attack shook the ground, waking nearby residents from their slumber with up to a dozen blasts, two sources in the area said.

"We were sleeping. Then we started hearing rockets hitting the complex and the ground started shaking and we ran into the basement," said a woman who lives adjacent to the Jamraya site.

The resident, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity over Israel's reported strike on Wednesday morning, said she could not tell whether the explosions which woke her were the result of an aerial strike.

Another source who has a relative working inside Jamraya reported that a building inside the complex had been cordoned off after the attack and that flames were seen rising from the area after the attack.

"It appears that there were about a dozen rockets that appeared to hit one building in the complex," the source, who also asked not to be identified, told Reuters. "The facility is closed today."

Israeli newspapers quoted foreign media on Thursday for reports on the attack. Journalists in Israel are required to submit articles on security and military issues to the censor, which has the power to block any publication of material it deems could compromise state security.

Syrian state television said two people were killed in the raid on Jamraya, which lies in the 25-km (15-mile) strip between Damascus and the Lebanese border. It described it as a scientific research centre "aimed at raising the level of resistance and self-defense".

Diplomatic sources from three countries told Reuters that chemical weapons were believed to be stored at Jamraya, and that it was possible that the convoy was near the large site when it came under attack. However, there was no suggestion that the vehicles themselves had been carrying chemical weapons.

"The target was a truck loaded with weapons, heading from Syria to Lebanon," said one Western diplomat, echoing others who said the convoy's load may have included anti-aircraft missiles or long-range rockets.

The raid followed warnings from Israel that it was ready to act to prevent the revolt against Assad leading to Syria's chemical weapons and modern rockets reaching either his Hezbollah allies or his Islamist enemies.

A regional security source said Israel's target was weaponry given by Assad's military to fellow Iranian ally Hezbollah.

"This episode boils down to a warning by Israel to Syria and Hezbollah not to engage in the transfer of sensitive weapons," the source said. "Assad knows his survival depends on his military capabilities and he would not want those capabilities neutralized by Israel - so the message is this kind of transfer is simply not worth it, neither for him nor Hezbollah."

Such a strike or strikes would fit Israel's policy of pre-emptive covert and overt action to curb Hezbollah and does not necessarily indicate a major escalation of the war in Syria. It does, however, indicate how the erosion of the Assad family's rule after 42 years is seen by Israel as posing a threat.

Israel this week echoed concerns in the United States about Syrian chemical weapons, but its officials say a more immediate worry is that the civil war could see weapons that are capable of denting its massive superiority in airpower and tanks reaching Hezbollah; the group fought Israel in 2006 and remains a more pressing threat than its Syrian and Iranian sponsors.

Connecticut union membership at lowest level in 2 decades

-

The number of organized Connecticut workers as a percentage of the total work force in 2012 hit its lowest level in more than two decades, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Fourteen percent of all Connecticut workers were union members, down from 16.8 percent in 2011 and from 17.3 percent as recently the as 2009. In 1995, the figure was 20.2 percent.

Nationally, the percentage of organized workers continued its 23-year decline in 2012, hitting 11.3 percent. It was 11.8 percent in 2011.

Lori Pelletier, secretary and treasurer of the Connecticut AFL-CIO, said the labor statistics at both the state and national levels are indicative of the ongoing struggle for economic recovery.

?Certainly, as Connecticut is trying to recover ... people are retiring and employers aren?t filling those positions,? Pelletier said. ?Nationally, workers who are looking to unionize are facing significant push back from employers, with $8 billion presently spent fighting workers who want to unionize.?

Larry Dorman, a spokesman for Council 4 of AFSCME, said the decline ?highlights the painful fact that people are working harder and harder for less and less.?

He said Council 4?s membership, the second largest in the state after the Connecticut Education Association, is down 9 percent in the last two years and the losses would have been worse if state workers hadn?t agreed to concessions as a part of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy?s state budget process a year and half ago .

?This does not bode well for our economic recovery or for Connecticut?s middle class,? Dorman said. ?The state is not hiring people and both state and local governments are managing (using) attrition.

?There is an incredible ideological assault going on against unions in Indiana and Michigan over right-to-work laws that is driving down the standard of living for workers.?

While neither Pelletier nor Dorman believe that right-to-work legislation would be approved in Connecticut, it won?t be for a lack of trying. Continued...

?There are 20 bills currently being put forth by the Connecticut legislature that are similar to right-to-work statutes in other states,? Pelletier said. ?We?re working to explain what these bills mean to legislators. Right-to-work states have more dependency on social services because workers aren?t making a living wage.?

Dorman said union leaders are proposing legislation that would establish a task force to investigate the feasibility of the state creating a defined benefit plan for low-income private sector workers who do not have access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan.

The plan labor wants to investigate calls for allowing private sector workers to contribute a certain percentage of their annual salary to a state-administered retirement savings trust, similar to what state workers now have, he said.

?I know some people love to whine and moan about Connecticut?s public employees? pensions,? Dorman said. ?But public pensions create thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in economic activity that the state wouldn?t otherwise have.?

A similar bill was approved last year by the state?s House of Representatives, but died in the Senate at the end of the legislative session, he said.

Donald Klepper-Smith, chief economist at DataCore Partners in New Haven, said the state?s labor unions, in both the private and public sector, are an important factor in the cost of doing business.

?Research shows ... long-term job growth is a function of the cost of doing business and unions artificially elevated the cost of labor,? he said.

The declining percentage of union members in Connecticut ?is reflective of an underlying tension? in the state?s economy, he said. ?Each individual when considering joining a union has to assess what do they stand to gain versus what do they stand to lose,? Klepper-Smith asserted. ?And you?re going to get a different answer with every individual.?

David Cadden, a management professor, said that historically speaking, unions have been responsible for important gains for both members and non-members alike.

?They are behind the development of child labor laws and the creation of a 40-hour work week,? Cadden said. While there have been declines in the number of union members among public employees and manufacturing workers, Cadden expects to see growth in organizing among retail workers and in other service industries. Green thumb? Washington looking for a pot consultant

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) ? Wanted: A green thumb with extensive knowledge of the black, or at least gray, market.

As Washington state tries to figure out how to regulate its newly legal marijuana, officials are hiring an adviser on all things weed: how it's best grown, dried, tested, labeled, packaged and cooked into brownies.

Sporting a mix of flannel, ponytails and suits, dozens of those angling for the job turned out Wednesday for a forum in Tacoma, several of them from out of state. The Liquor Control Board, the agency charged with developing rules for the marijuana industry, reserved a convention center hall for a state bidding expert to take questions about the position and the hiring process.

"Since it's not unlikely with this audience, would a felony conviction preclude you from this contract?" asked Rose Habib, an analytical chemist from a marijuana testing lab in Missoula, Mont.

The answer: It depends. A pot-related conviction is probably fine, but a "heinous felony," not so much, responded John Farley, a procurement coordinator with the Liquor Control Board.

Washington and Colorado this fall became the first states to pass laws legalizing the recreational use of marijuana and setting up systems of state-licensed growers, processors and retail stores where adults over 21 can walk in and buy up to an ounce of heavily taxed cannabis.

Both states are working to develop rules for the emerging pot industry. Up in the air is everything from how many growers and stores there should be, to how the marijuana should be tested to ensure people don't get sick.

Sales are due to begin in Washington state in December.

Washington's Liquor Control Board has a long and "very good" history with licensing and regulation, spokesman Mikhail Carpenter said.

"But there are some technical aspects with marijuana we could use a consultant to help us with," Carpenter said.

The board has advertised for consulting services in four categories. The first is "product and industry knowledge" and requires "at least three years of consulting experience relating to the knowledge of the cannabis industry, including but not limited to product growth, harvesting, packaging, product infusion and product safety."

Other categories cover quality testing, including how to test for levels of THC, the compound that gets marijuana users high; statistical analysis of how much marijuana the state's licensed growers should produce; and the development of regulations, a category that requires a "strong understanding of state, local or federal government processes," with a law degree preferred.

Farley said the state hopes to award a single contract covering all four categories, but if no bidder or team of bidders has expertise in all fields? regulatory law, statistical analysis and pot growing ? multiple contracts could be awarded. Or bidders who are strong in one category could team up with those who are strong in another. Bids are due Feb. 15, with the contract awarded in March.

Habib, the chemist, said she's part of a team of marijuana and regulatory experts from Montana who are bidding for the contract. They're fed up with federal raids on medical dispensaries there.

"We want to move here and make it work. We want to be somewhere this is moving forward and being embraced socially," she said.

Khurshid Khoja, a corporate lawyer from San Francisco, wore a suit and sat beside a balding, ponytailed man in a gray sweatshirt ? Ed Rosenthal, a co-founder of High Times magazine and a recognized expert on marijuana cultivation. They're on a team bidding for the contract.

"I've seen the effect of regulation of marijuana all my life," Khoja said. "I'd like to see a more rational, scientific approach to it."

Several people asked whether winning the contract, or even subcontracting with the winning bidder, would preclude them from getting state licenses to grow, process or sell cannabis. Farley said yes: It would pose a conflict of interest to have the consultant helping develop the regulations being subject to those rules. But once the contract has expired, they could apply for state marijuana licenses, he said.

After the questions ended, the bidders mingled, exchanging business cards and talking about how they might team up. One Seattle-area marijuana grower, a college student who declined to give his name after noting that a dispensary he worked with had been raided by federal authorities in 2011, approached Rosenthal.

"It would be my dream to smoke a bowl with you after this," he said.

Despite revival, US economy still on life support

16 hrs.

After four years of government prodding ? from federal stimulus spending to the Fed?s historic easy-money policies ? the U.S. economy finally?is showing signs of sustainable growth.?

But?it?s not out of the woods yet.

The hopeful signals are coming from a broad range of indicators - from upbeat reports on home and car sales to business investment and manufacturing orders. Those reports have raised hopes that the ongoing move to balance the federal budget with tax increases and spending cuts won?t dampen the emerging recovery.

?We think the U.S. economy will be able to power through that this year ? even with the drag,? said
?Tony Fratto, an economist at Hamilton Place Strategies and former Treasury official under President George W. Bush.

But when Federal Reserve officials wrap up?their two-day meeting Wednesday, they?re widely expected to continue to keep their foot on the gas pedal by extending their aggressive program of holding interest rates near zero.?

Though some critics think it may be time for the central bank to begin winding down its epic easy-money strategy, Fed policy makers have already promised to stick with it until the unemployment rate falls below 6.5 percent. ?

The halting pace of the recovery is expected to be highlighted Wednesday when the government takes its initial estimate of the growth of gross domestic product for the last three months of 2012. Analysts polled by Reuters expect the report to peg expansion at a weak 1.1 percent annual rate, down from a 3.1 percent rate in the previous three months.

But a basket of separate reports this week is expected to confirm the marked pickup in growth as the year drew to a close.?

Orders for durable goods jumped by 4.6 percent in December, the?Commerce Department said Monday, more than double what private forecasters had expected. Though many business managers complained loudly that uncertainty in Washington had left them unwilling to take on new workers, they were busy investing in new plant and equipment to keep up with rising demand from customers.

?CEOs may have been worrying about falling off the cliff but demand for big-ticket items still soared,? said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic?Advisors.

The report followed wider signs of a broad pickup in demand throughout the economy. Rising home sales, which began to pick up in the second half of last year, continue to push prices higher, helping convince reluctant buyers and sellers that the market has finally bottomed out. ?

Car sales jumped 16 percent in the fourth quarter of last year compared to the previous year, and are on pace for another annual sales increase. Automakers will report monthly sales on Friday and are expected to post another month of robust demand. The prolonged sales downturn during the Great Recession left behind an aging fleet of cars and trucks that buyers are now replacing. ?

Despite a lackluster holiday shopping season, overall retail sales in the last three months of the year were up 6 percent from a year ago.?Manufacturers are also seeing a solid pickup in orders for new goods. Lower energy costs -- the result of an ongoing boom in natural gas production?--?have helped them win bids against low-cost foreign competitors.?

But unemployment remains stubbornly high, as the latest reading, due this Friday, is expected to show. Economists are looking for a net gain of just 163,000 new jobs for the latest month. That?s barely enough to keep up with population growth and not enough to move the needle of the unemployment rate which forecasters expect to remain stuck at 7.8 percent.

To be sure, the Fed?s easy money policy is helping some households ? especially those with investments in the stock market. With interest rates at near zero, investors looking for a positive return have few alternatives.?

Stocks are up 15 percent since June. In January alone, investors sank $55 billion in new cash into stock mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, the biggest monthly inflow on record, according to TrimTabs Investment Research.?

Fears of a financial meltdown in Europe have faded. Last year?s worries about a sharp slowdown in Asia have eased for now.?And despite continued threats of political disruption in Washington, the long-running battle over the federal budget seems to be inching toward resolution.

On Monday, credit rating agency Fitch said last week?s deal to delay suspension of the country's debt limit have reduced the odds that it might strip United States of its AAA rating. Another rating agency, Standard and Poor?s, cut the U.S. debt rating one notch after the last debt ceiling debacle in July 2011 pushed the Treasury to the brink of defaulting on its bonds.?

But the recovery remains weak by historical standards. Four years after a recession, pent-up demand typically produces a strong rebound in growth and a?sustained hiring spree by employers. So far, that hasn?t happened.?

Most forecasters expect the slow steady pace of expansion to continue through this year and into 2014, with the unemployment rate gradually falling.?

The consensus sees GDP picking up to a 2.7 percent annual rate by the end of this year and 3.0 percent by the end of 2014, according to the latest survey by Blue Chip Economic Indicators. That pace is expected to pull the unemployment rate down to 7.5 percent by the end of this year and to 7.0 percent by the end of next year.

If that scenario plays out, it will be awhile before the Fed reaches its 6.5 percent jobless rate target and begins to throttle back its money-making machinery. ? ? ? ??

?At some point were going to have to wean ourselves off that kind of support,? said Fratto. ?And I think we?re going to see that this year. But we have to go through that ? and it?s going to bode well for the future.?

Male dancers signal their strength to men and women

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Heterosexual men pick up clues about other men's physical qualities from their dance moves just as heterosexual women do, say researchers at Northumbria University.

A study, led by psychologist Dr Nick Neave and researcher Kristofor McCarty, used 3D motion-capture technology and biomechanical analyses to examine the extent to which male dancing provides clues about the dancer's physical strength and fitness to both male and female observers.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Human Biology, suggest that male observers pick up on the strength of their potential rivals for female mates.

Researchers at Northumbria's School of Life Sciences filmed 30 males, aged 19-37, as they danced to a basic drum rhythm. Participants also completed a fitness test and assessments of upper and lower body strength. The dance clips were converted into virtual humanoid characters (avatars) and rated by women and men on perceived dance and physical qualities. The ratings were then correlated with various biomechanical indices.

The results showed that both sexes found significant positive associations between an individual's hand grip strength and their perceived dance quality, these qualities were picked up by the size and vigour of the movements of the upper body and arms.

Although it is traditionally thought that signals given off by men when they dance have been designed -- like animal mating displays -- to be interpreted as clues of their physical attributes to the opposite sex, it seems that heterosexual men are also making use of these signals, presumably to detect a potential love rival.

Dr Nick Neave believes that this increased sensitivity to male qualities by other heterosexual men may be due to intrasexual rivalry -- men sizing up the strength and virility of their competition.

He said: "Rated dance quality was positively associated with actual grip strength and these clues of upper-body strength were most accurately picked up by male observers. This ability to discern upper-body strength is principally because men are looking for cues of 'formidability' in other males.

"Upper-body strength is highly related to fighting ability as it reflects the ability to do damage, especially in intra-sexual conflicts. The ability to gauge strength before potential conflicts is sensible, especially to other males."

Also part of the research team were Northumbria University academics Dr Nick Caplan and Johannes H?nekopp, with Bernard Fink, from the Institute of Zoology and Anthropology, University of G?ttingen, Germany.

The study, "Male body movements as possible cues to physical strength: a biomechanical analysis", is published online in this month's American Journal of Human Biology

Egypt could 'collapse,' army chief warns

Reuters

Protesters gather near a tank as they defy a curfew in the city of Port Said on Monday.

By Tom Perry, Yasmine Saleh and Yusri Mohamed, Reuters

The struggle between political forces in Egypt could ?lead to the collapse of the state,? the country?s army chief said Tuesday.

In a posting to the army?s Facebook page, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said political and economic issues now represented a ?real threat? to security.

"The continuation of the struggle of the different political forces ... over the management of state affairs could lead to the collapse of the state," General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said.

He added that the army would remain "the solid and the cohesive block" on which "the foundation of the state rests."

Al-Sisi, who is also defense minister, also said that the army had been deployed in cities along the Suez Canal primarily to protect the key global trade link.

Islamist President Mohammed Morsi has imposed emergency rule in an attempt to end days of clashes that have left at least 52 people dead.

But Egyptian protesters defied an overnight curfew in restive towns along the Suez Canal, attacking police stations.

At least two men died Monday night or early Tuesday in fighting in the canal city of Port Said, the latest unrest in a wave of violence unleashed last week on the eve of the anniversary of the 2011 revolt that brought down autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Cairo sky lit by flames
Political opponents spurned a call by Morsi for talks on Monday to try to end the violence. Instead, huge crowds of protesters took to the streets in Cairo and Alexandria, and in the three Suez Canal cities - Port Said, Ismailia and Suez - where Morsi imposed emergency rule and a curfew on Sunday.

"Down, down with Mohammed Morsi! Down, down with the state of emergency!" crowds shouted in Ismailia. In Cairo, flames lit up the night sky as protesters set vehicles ablaze.

The demonstrators accuse Mubarak's successor Morsi of betraying the two-year-old revolution. Morsi and his supporters accuse the protesters of seeking to overthrow Egypt's first ever democratically elected leader by undemocratic means.

Debris from days of unrest was strewn on the streets around Cairo's Tahrir Square, cauldron of the anti-Mubarak uprising.

Protesters stand by a vehicle of the Central Security Forces that had been stolen then set alight during clashes near Tahrir Square in Cairo on Monday.

Youths clambered over a burned-out police van. But unlike on previous mornings in the past few days, there was no early sign of renewed clashes with police.

In Port Said, men attacked police stations after dark. A security source said some police and troops were injured. A medical source said two men were killed and 12 injured in the clashes, including 10 with gunshot wounds.

"The people want to bring down the regime," crowds chanted in Alexandria. "Leave means go, and don't say no!"

Voters backed Islamists
Since Mubarak was toppled, Islamists have won two referendums, two parliamentary elections and a presidential vote.

But that legitimacy has been challenged by an opposition that accuses Morsi of imposing a new form of authoritarianism, and punctuated by repeated waves of unrest that have prevented a return to stability in the most populous Arab state.

The political unrest in the Suez Canal cities has been exacerbated by street violence linked to death penalties imposed on soccer supporters convicted of involvement in stadium rioting in Port Said a year ago, which lead to the deaths of 74 people.

The president announced the emergency measures on television on Sunday. "The protection of the nation is the responsibility of everyone. We will confront any threat to its security with force and firmness within the remit of the law," Morsi said.

His demeanor infuriated his opponents, not least when he wagged a finger at the camera.

Some activists said Morsi's measures to try to impose control on the turbulent streets could backfire.

"Martial law, state of emergency and army arrests of civilians are not a solution to the crisis," said Ahmed Maher of the April 6 movement that helped galvanize the 2011 uprising. "All this will do is further provoke the youth. The solution has to be a political one that addresses the roots of the problem."

Video: Immigration talks aided by aligning political self-interest

>> in our political director, chief white house correspondent, chuck todd . and chuck, some people look at the presidency as a checkbook, and certainly this will amount to one of the first checks the president writes, drawing down that political balance.

>> reporter: well, that's right. and tomorrow he's going to nevada to create public pressure, the white house says. it was supposed to be the place where he was going to launch this push for immigration, but the white house is very supportive of what this bipartisan group of senators are not ready to fully endorse the deal, but they endorse it in principle. and that's exactly right. and it goes to what kelly said at the beginning, brian. both parties -- big deals happen in washington when the political self interests align. and john mccain has been very straight forward about the self interests of the republican party . they have got to fix their problems with hispanics, and that's why they're at the table.

Marcos dictatorship victims to be compensated

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Philippine lawmakers are preparing to approve $246 million in compensation for thousands of people who were persecuted decades ago under dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

It will be the first time the government officially recognizes the suffering of people like Bonifacio Ilagan, a playwright and writer for an underground communist newspaper. He was arrested and tortured, and his sister disappeared in a maze of police cells and military houses.

Marcos placed the Philippines under martial law in 1972. Detentions, beatings, harassment and killings of regime opponents continued until Marcos was toppled in 1986.

Now, 27 years later, the Philippine Congress is expected to ratify a bill awarding compensation and recognition to martial law victims on Tuesday or Wednesday. The money was recovered by the government from Marcos' ill-gotten wealth.

Obama: Gun-control advocates have to listen more

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says gun-control advocates have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes in the debate over firearms in America.

In an interview with The New Republic, Obama says he has "a profound respect" for the tradition of hunting that dates back for generations.

"And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake. Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas," he says.

Obama has called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and is pushing other policies following the mass shooting last month at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. In response, gun-rights advocates have accused Obama and others of ignoring the Second Amendment rights of Americans.

The president says it's understandable that people are protective of their family traditions when it comes to hunting.

"So it's trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes," he says.

Has Obama himself ever fired a gun?

"Yes," the president says, "in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time."

His daughters don't shoot skeet at the presidential retreat in Maryland, he adds, "but oftentimes guests of mine go up there."

The interview appears in the Feb. 11 issue of The New Republic.

UFC on Fox 6 results: Demetrious Johnson retains title, ?Rampage? loses in Octagon finale

CHICAGO -- The UFC's stop in the Windy City had two great knockouts, a champion holding onto his belt, and the last fight of a one-time champ.

Despite a strong start by John Dodson, Demetrious Johnson held onto his championship belt with a unanimous decision. The judges saw it 48-47, 49-46, 48-47 for Johnson.

Unsurprisingly, Johnson and Dodson fought a fast-paced first two rounds. Johnson tried to slow things down in the first round with a takedown. While he did get Dodson to to the ground, the challenger popped back to his feet quickly.

Dodson dropped Johnson twice in the second round, and shook off Johnson's take down attempts with a great sprawl. Johnson seemed to have a hard time even getting close to Dodson to land a punch.

[Related: T.J. Grant and Ryan Bader shine at UFC on Fox 6]

A Johnson knee in the fourth round caused a small fight stoppage. Dodson's hand was on the ground as Johnson threw a knee to Dodson's head, which is an illegal strike. The bout was stopped as doctors checked Dodson's eye and Johnson was warned. The fight went on, but not without plenty of boos from the crowd in Chicago.

When the fight restarted, it was all Johnson. He controlled Dodson against the cage, and threw knees that busted up Dodson's face. Johnson was able to get a takedown at the beginning of the fifth round, too. Though boos rained down, Johnson kept the fight against the cage.

Later, the crowd got behind him as Johnson elevated, tightened his legs around Dodson's torso and threw elbows. It was a creative move that likely could only happen in the flyweight division. Johnson finished the round with Dodson against the cage, and knee after knee after knee to the body and face.

Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson vs. Glover Teixeira

If this really was Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's last fight in the UFC, it wasn't one to remember. He was outstruck and outwrestled by Glover Teixeira throughout their bout. Teixeira took the fight 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 on the judges' cards.

Teixeira's first round was his best, as he was able to take Jackson down early and mount him and take his back. Late in the round, Teixeira knocked Jackson down with a punch and looked close to finishing, but wasn't able to end the fight.

The rest of the fight featured a worn out Jackson trying to avoid Teixeira's takedown attempts unsuccessfully. Jackson threw some big punches, and even jawed at Teixeira during the bout, but he wasn't able to score any big offense.

While this fight will be remembered for being Jackson's last UFC bout, Teixeira scored his third straight UFC win on Saturday night. He looked impressive against the former champ.

Anthony Pettis vs. Donald Cerrone

Anthony Pettis won his much anticipated bout with Donald Cerrone by landing big, memorable strikes. Pettis was getting the better of their striking exchanges early, which set him up for a big finish. Pettis threw a kick that landed hard on Cerrone's body, then finished with a punch. Cerrone fell to the ground in a heap, and the fight was stopped at 2:35 in the first round.

Pettis lost his first fight in the UFC after coming from the WEC as the champ, but he's been winning ever since. He has wins over Joe Lauzon, Jeremy Stephens and now Cerrone. After the fight, he made a pitch to UFC president Dana White.

"I want my title shot. I should have had it years ago. People say I can?t wrestle because of the Guida fight, but I had a serious shoulder injury. Now I am 100 percent. No one can do in the Octagon what I can do."

While lightweight champion Benson Henderson has a fight set up with Gilbert Melendez, a shot for Pettis isn't unwarranted. It would be a rematch of their WEC title fight, which Pettis won in the promotion's final fight.

Ricardo Lamas vs. Erik Koch

Lamas won the first round by constantly pressuring Koch against the cage. It wasn't exactly the most thrilling round to have start a card on network television, but it led to a thrilling second round. Lamas took advantage of Koch's slip, and then finished the fight with nasty, nasty ground and pound. Lamas started with elbows, then started with strikes that cut open Koch's face. Koch had no answer for Lamas' relentless strikes, and the bout was stopped at 2:32 in the second round.

Lamas thought his performance warranted a title shot.

"I?ve beat Cub Swanson, I?ve beat Hioki and now I?ve beat Koch. All those guys were supposed to be fighting for the title at one point. I beat them all. We?re all here to be world champ and I am no different. I want the winner of Aldo vs Edgar next week. I don?t care who wins, I want the winner."

Dear Students,
I Lord Death will give you the chance to try collecting at least 12 souls by the end of the week.
Remember dear students you need a total of 99 souls, and 1 witch soul to become one of my Death Scythes.
Also, witch souls are very hard to collect so if you mess up on collecting the witch soul.
I am sorry to say but you must repeat the process of collecting 99 souls from the beginning.
Take care everyone,

Bill Penalizes Use Of The American Flag In The Absence Of A Puerto Rican Flag

Puerto Rico?s House of Representatives is considering a new bill that would penalize the use of the American flag, in the absence of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico?s flag on any building housing the three branches of the state or municipal government, as well as any public corporation, local media reported.

According to an island daily, Primera Hora, the proposed law filed by Rep. Charlie Hernandez aims to amend State Department regulations, and make those who violate the flag rule subject to an administrative offense and a fine of $100 to $500.

"The flag is the national symbol of the highest value to a nation. It is the main symbol that identifies each town and stands before the range of countries that make up the international community," the text of Hernandez?s bill number 555 reads. "The people of Puerto Rico are no exception to the global community, because we have our own flag: the ?monoestrellada?."

Hernandez has defended the bill by saying Puerto Rico is culturally unique and needs to represent the island?s individuality.

"During its 113 years of life the Puerto Rican flag has suffered the contempt and affront of external and internal enemies who try to combat the existence of a palpable and indisputable Puerto Rican national identity," the text of the bill reads according to El Nuevo Dia, another island daily.

The flag proposal comes at a crucial political moment for the island. In November a two-part referendum revealed that 53.97 percent of Puerto Rican voters count themselves among those dissatisfied with the island?s commonwealth status .

A second question on the same ballot asked whether voters preferred to see Puerto Rico become a U.S. state, an independent country, or a freely associated state in a close alliance with the United States. Some 61 percent of those who answered the question voted for statehood , though more than 498,600 people intentionally did not register their opinion on the ballot.

In some parts of Latin America, the blank vote is considered a distinct political statement indicating that the voter does not agree with the terms or content of a question on the ballot.

Cyber 9/11 could occur 'imminently': official

2 hrs.

WASHINGTON ??Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned on Thursday that a major cyber attack is a looming threat and could have the same sort of impact as last year's Superstorm Sandy, which knocked out electricity in a large swathe of the Northeast.

Napolitano said a "cyber 9/11" could happen "imminently" and that critical infrastructure ? including water, electricity and gas ? was very vulnerable to such a strike.

"We shouldn't wait until there is a 9/11 in the cyber world. There are things we can and should be doing right now that, if not prevent, would mitigate the extent of damage," said Napolitano, speaking at the Wilson Center think tank in Washington and referring to the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Napolitano runs the sprawling Homeland Security Department that was created 10 years ago in the aftermath of September 11 and charged with preventing another such event.

She urged Congress to pass legislation governing cyber security so the government could share information with the private sector to prevent an attack on infrastructure, much of which is privately owned.

A cyber security bill failed in Congress last year after business and privacy groups opposed it. The measure would have increased information-sharing between private companies and U.S. intelligence agencies and established voluntary standards for businesses that control power grids or water treatment plants.

Business groups said the legislation was government overreach. Privacy groups feared it might lead to Internet eavesdropping.

New cyber legislation is being considered, but it is unclear whether it will get through the gridlocked Congress.

President Barack Obama is expected to soon issue an executive order that would set up a voluntary system to help protect some critical infrastructure and offer incentives to companies that participate.

But without a new law, companies cannot be granted any kind of legal immunity for sharing information with the government and within the industry about potential threats.

Officials have pointed to recent hacking attacks on U.S. banks as a sign that the cyber threat is real and growing.

"The clarion call is here and we need to be dealing with this very urgently," said Napolitano. "Attacks are coming all the time. They are coming from different sources, they take different forms. But they are increasing in seriousness and sophistication."

Grow Your Business and Reach New Customers with Social CRM ...

Building a strong and valuable relationship with your customer base is more important than ever. According to thesocialskinny.com, 36% of social media users post brand-related content and 50% of people follow brands in social media.?

In November 2012, SuperOffice conducted a survey among 150 organizations across Europe. SuperOffice wanted to find out what challenges and issues businesses have when it comes to building relationships with their customers.

Image

The research showed that there were three distinct challenges:

A) Finding the right social activities. Tracking the social activities and making sure they were targeted at the right customer was a challenge for almost half (48%) of respondents.

B) Keeping track of relevant customer information. More than one third (38%) of respondents found it difficult to maintain the knowledge of customers? preferences in order to target relevant products and services.

C) Communicating in a personal way. 42% of respondents faced challenges communicating with their customers in a personalized way, even if they did have relevant information about the customer.

It seems clear that ?being social? is something that many companies are struggling with ? across business types and markets. By implementing a social CRM strategy, brands can leverage social media marketing and customer relationship management data to grow their business.

The State of Social Marketing 2012 report found that only 16% of respondents are using a social CRM system, while 17% do not know what social CRM is. Surprisingly, 46% simply said they didn?t use social CRM.

?Social CRM survey

Social CRM is the process of converting content into conversations and meaningful relationships, and is achieved through the integration of web analytics, social media and CRM software.

Social CRM is part process, part people and part technology

  • Sales teams can be equipped with significantly more relevant information about their customers through online conversations and existing CRM activity history.
  • Marketing teams can now meet prospects at their point of need, connecting with them much earlier in the buying process with real-time listening and monitoring online conversations.
  • Product development teams can engage and collaborate directly with customers throughout the development phase from idea, design, proto-typing and testing, which builds brand advocacy and positive word of mouth.
  • Customer service teams can provide responses to where the customer is, equipped with their entire interaction, engagement and conversation history across all communication channels.

In order to effectively communicate with your customer base and overcome the challenges organizations face, here are five ways to successfully implement a social CRM strategy.

1. Social CRM is low cost

Companies can take advantage of social networking at little or no cost. Social networks are free and it?s easy to create an account. The only investment required is man hours, giving small businesses a greater opportunity when competing with corporations who spend millions of dollars in advertising campaigns. A video that goes viral on the web can result in millions of views, providing excellent exposure at no cost.

2. Social CRM provides instant feedback

Social media networks provide a direct communication channel with their customers, providing valuable insight and feedback in real-time. Customers can share opinions on product releases and suggestions for improvement. Use negative comments to improve your brands reputation; listen and react to the feedback. Positive comments can be used to promote your brand, and be included as customer endorsements.

3. Social CRM helps create a community

Social media is a great avenue to build a community and increase customer engagement around products and services. In an online community, you can keep customers informed on the latest company news, events and create a buzz around a new product release. By having a community, customers will be able to interact with each other and share opinions, which increase your brand identity, brand credibility and will develop long-lasting loyal customers.

4. Social CRM is used by your competition

Your competitors are using social CRM already. Search for your competition on Facebook or Twitter and compare social media strategies to identify strengths and weaknesses that your brand can improve upon to create a better social experience for your customers. Follow your competition in the active social channels to monitor what they think of your brand and use this as leverage for improving your social CRM strategy.

5. Social CRM improves marketing ROI

Social CRM allows companies can better target products to a segment of customers, develop products or services based on customer feedback, improve the customer experience with real time responses and generate interest and brand awareness through word of mouth. Through integration of web analytics and CRM software, brands can now measure social conversations to website traffic, downloads, conversions and sales.

Conclusion

In today?s financial climate, marketers are bound by strict budgets and limited resources. Companies are now exploring new ways of becoming more efficient and improve their CRM process. Whether engaging with fans on Facebook or tweeting on Twitter, social media is proving to be a cost effective solution for improving CRM to help acquire new customers and engage with existing customers.
