Data presented at North American Menopause Society Annual Meeting

Northridge, Calif. (November 12, 2012) Eating more soy was associated with larger reductions in menopausal vasomotor symptoms (VMS), such as hot flashes, among U.S. women that can convert soy to a compound called equol, according to data from a first-of-its-kind study presented in an oral session at the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) 2012 annual meeting.

"Numerous studies have examined the association between soy isoflavones from both soy foods and supplements - and menopausal VMS, but with mixed results," said Belinda H. Jenks, Ph.D., Director of Scientific Affairs & Nutrition Education at Pharmavite LLC., which funded the prospective observational study. "However, they do not routinely account for whether the enrolled women can produce equol, which has documented reductions on certain VMS such as hot flashes."

The study, conducted by researchers at the Group Health Research Institute, University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Institute, is the first to examine equol production status and the effect of varied soy consumption on VMS in menopausal U.S. women. Evidence from prior observational studies suggests that Japanese women have milder menopausal symptoms in those who are equol producers compared to nonproducers. Additional peer-reviewed studies have documented that dietary supplements containing equol have reduced VMS symptoms in postmenopausal women who are not equol producers.

Equol is produced from the natural metabolism, or conversion, of daidzein, an isoflavone found in whole soybeans. Not everyone can produce equol after soy consumption, as the production depends on the types of bacteria present in the large intestine. About 50 percent of Asians and 20 to 30 percent of North Americans and Europeans, who in general consume less soy than Asians, have the ability to produce equol.

NAMS Study Quantifies VMS Reduction in US Equol Producers

Consuming higher levels of soy containing daidzein was associated with fewer VMS, but only among the women who were equol producers.

Among the 129 equol producers, 36 percent of the study's 355 participants, those consuming the most daidzein in their daily diet, versus those with the least daidzein, were 76 percent more likely to have fewer than the study's daily average number of VMS, 2.33. The positive trend in the equol producers between increased daidzein consumption and reduced VMS symptoms occurred across all four intake levels of daidzein (p=0.06). In comparison, no associations between daidzein intake and VMS were observed in the 229 equol nonproducers.

Investigators grouped all of the women into four levels of soy consumption. The four equol producer groups averaged 28.55, 14.2, 9.01 and 4.88 milligrams of daidzein per day (mg/d) and the average daidzein intake levels in the equol nonproducers were 28.69, 13.76, 8.98 and 4.63 mg/d, which is a range comparable to general soy consumption in Asians.

The researchers also used the Soy-Food Questionnaire to ask women about their diets. This validated tool, developed by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, poses questions about the consumption of 20 commonly eaten soy foods and supplements to assess soy intake among postmenopausal women in the United States.

The enrolled women averaged 53 years and more than 60 percent were postmenopausal.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. supported the study. The complete data will be submitted to a peer-review journal for publication.

About Equol

S-Equol, produced in the intestine by bacteria converting daidzein to the compound, has the ability to bind to the same estrogen receptors as naturally estrogen, with a strong affinity to the estrogen receptor beta. On binding to these receptors, S-equol mimics some, but not all, activities of estrogen. Because of these actions at the receptor, it has been proposed that S-equol may alleviate some of the symptoms caused by diminished estrogen production during menopause.

Development and ongoing research of a supplement containing S-equol is conducted by the Saga Nutraceuticals Research Institute of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Pharmavite LLC, the makers of Nature Made vitamins and minerals and a subsidiary of Otsuka, is studying the supplement containing S-equol for the management of menopausal symptoms. More information about the supplement containing S-equol, including results of studies, is at http://www.naturalequol.com.

Gen. Allen probed over 'inappropriate' emails

Military officials announced that up to 30,000 pages of "potentially inappropriate" e-mails connect Gen. ?John Allen, who replaced former CIA Director David Petraeus as commander in Afghanistan last year, to Jill Kelley, the woman whose initial complaint launched the FBI probe into the connection between Petraeus and his biographer Paula Broadwell. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

By NBC News staff

U.S. General John Allen, commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, is under investigation over allegations of ?inappropriate? emails between him and the woman who sparked the probe into CIA Director David Petraeus, officials said early Tuesday.

In a statement, the Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said that the FBI had referred ?a matter involving" Allen to the Department of Defense.

?Today, the secretary directed that the matter be referred to the Inspector General of the Department of Defense for investigation, and it is now in the hands of the Inspector General,? Panetta said.

The statement said that Allen would remain commander of ISAF during the investigation and that he was ?entitled to due process in this matter.?

Emails on 'coming and goings' of Petraeus, other military officials escalated FBI concerns

A senior defense official told reporters Tuesday that it was alleged there had been ?inappropriate communications? between Allen and Jill Kelley.

He also said the general ?disputes that he has engaged in any wrongdoing in this matter.??The official said the investigation involved some 20,000 to 30,000 pages of material, mostly emails, which were sent from 2010 to 2012.

The Petraeus scandal emerged after Kelley complained to the FBI about receiving anonymous threatening emails.?FBI agents traced the allegedly threatening emails received by Kelley to Paula Broadwell,?Petraeus' biographer.

Those who know the two women at the center of General David Petraeus' affair scandal are speaking out. Jill Kelley's brother says she is "dedicated" to her husband, while Paula Broadwell's friend calls her "a pretty great person." NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

?

During the investigation, agents discovered emails between Petraeus and Broadwell that were indicative of an extramarital affair between them, according to government and law enforcement officials.?

Petraeus, who was appointed 14 months ago to head the Central Intelligence Agency, announced his resignation on Friday, citing an extramarital affair.

Confirmation hearing on hold
Allen was in line to take over as head of U.S. forces in Europe and NATO's Supreme Allied Commander in Europe.

On Monday, he was in Washington, D.C., preparing for his Senate confirmation hearings which were originally scheduled for Thursday, NBC News reported. That nomination has now been put on hold ?until the relevant facts are determined,? Panetta?s statement said.

?The secretary has asked both Senators Levin and McCain that the confirmation hearing on General Allen's pending nomination to be Commander of the United State European Command and Supreme Allied Commander, Europe be delayed,? the statement said.

Allen had no advance warning about the investigation, a close aide of Allen?s told NBC News. He was alerted to the probe by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey Monday night ET. Allen had a number of meetings scheduled for Tuesday on Capitol Hill, although the aide was unsure if they would take place.

The FBI eventually discovered that the emails received by Jill Kelley, a close friend of the Petraeus family, were sent by Paula Broadwell. And as they dug deeper, the affair between Broadwell and Petraeus came to light. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Allen?s connection to the Petraeus investigation also seems to have caught the Defense Department off guard.

?This came as very surprising news, to say the least. No one in the Pentagon is leaping to conclusions just yet,? a senior defense official traveling with Panetta told NBC News.? ?It's important to review the materials to determine the facts, and it's too early speculate about where this will lead.? In the meantime, Gen. Allen needs to focus on the war effort, which he's successfully led since last year.?

The ISAF was also unaware of the investigation until late Monday or early Tuesday, and it declined to comment, in a written statement, referring all questions to the Defense Department.

Allen, a highly decorated officer, took over as ISAF commander in July 2011, and was nominated?on Oct. 10 to take over as NATO commander, the same time that his successor at the ISAF was named as General Joseph Dunford.

The confirmation of Dunford, currently assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, is now expected to be fast tracked.

?The secretary has respectfully requested that the Senate act promptly on that nomination," Panetta?s statement said.

NBC News' Courtney Kube, Ian Johnston and Rachel Elbaum contributed to this report.

Some members of Congress are saying that they or, at the least President Obama, should have been told about the investigation into the director of the CIA while it was going on. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Fantastic Royal to thump Bersheda Phantom in A1 400m Flat at Romford

Bersheda Phantom?s claims are solid in Monday?s A1 400m Flat at Romford. The A. Ingram-trained is appearing after a couple of fantastic victories, the latest of which came just a few days ago.

The black dog suffered a lot of mess in October, but this month so far has proved to be lucky. On the third of November, he grabbed the first place by one and a quarter lengths despite getting bumped in the beginning.

The son of Black Shaw, out of Beat Them Millie, carried forward his good momentum to bag another victory, this time by even bigger margin. On November 8th, he always led the proceedings, taking the big prize easily by four lengths.

Bersheda Phantom is in great shape, and one can?t knock recent success. But there are a few things going against him. He is moving up to this level, and will be under tremendous pressure. So, he needs to raise his game to be equally good in this class.

Furthermore, the draw isn?t in his favour. He has a tradition of getting bumped after leaving the third box, and a similar incident might take place tonight. So, the bettors should not trust him blindly.

In such circumstances, Fantastic Royal looks safer option. The black bitch has recently made two fantastic trips at this level. On her promotion to this level on the first of November, she was second behind Confident Ramona.

She further improved, and clinched a fabulous ?-length win just a few days back. The J. Reynolds-trained has done well at this level, and will be under less pressure than Bersheda Phantom. Hence, a chance can easily be taken on her.

Besides the pair, four hounds will look to do some damage. Their names are: Millwards Tiger, Farloe Tendulkar, Redhot Poker and Maureens Mystery. The excitement will be started at 21:30 GMT.

Maureens Mystery will find it hard to fancy chances. Millwards Tiger won?t be far away as the medals are awarded. Redhot Poker is unlikely to make an impression. Farloe Tendulkar is stepping down to this class after finishing third at the top level. Yet, his chances are not bright.

DmC: Devil May Cry ? Vergil's Downfall Announcement Trailer ...

Published: 12 November 2012 1:29 PM UTC

Capcom has a very special?announcement?that I?m so excited about, I posted literally after watching the trailer for it. Say what you will about Ninja Theory, but they are playing it smart here. They aren?t just featuring Vergil in the next game, he has his own section of the game via future DLC (hold your comments about on disc DLC please).

Capitalizing off the success of Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, ?Vergil?s Downfall? features a section where you will be able to play as Vergil, and he controls very differently than Dante. Dare I say better? We shall have to wait and see. This will tell his story and how he got to be where he is, in relation to the new story being told in DmC. Also, this section will feature four different difficulty settings with it, for those looking for just the right challenge. I?ll give you all some time to watch the trailer for this?announcement?before continuing here.

YouTube Preview Image

Now, I did say hold those comments about on disc DLC. Knowing Capcom, it?s probably on there. The good part however, is that if you pre-order the game from GameStop, you get this sweet piece of DLC for free! So, if you plan on getting this game, or are even thinking about it, get out there and pre-order. There is no date confirmed for this as of yet, but at least you lock yourself in for when it rolls out, if you pre-order. Did I mention to pre-order? You have no right to complain about said DLC on disc when you could have taken action to get it for free. Just saying.

You can look forward to your standard crazy stylish action game on January 15th, 2013.

UPDATE: The price for ?Vergil?s Downfall? (if you don?t pre-order) is $8.99. Also, what I kept poking fun at with Capcom is confirmed not true, via Brett Elston (Senior Online Community Manager, Capcom Unity).
