Slidell Police arrest attempted kidnapper | NOLA.com

Slidell Police have arrested a 75-year-old man who they say tried to kidnap a 14-year-old girl Saturday morning while she was riding her bicycle to school. Elvest Thompson is being held in the St. Tammany Parish jail, charged with attempted kidnapping, according to Slidell Police Detective Daniel Seuzeneau.

According to Seuzeneau, the girl was riding her bicycle at 8:30 a.m. Saturday behind Big Lots at 196 Gause Boulevard when a man blocked her with his car, grabbed her wrist and tried to drag her into the back seat. The girl fought back, punching and kicking the man, and eventually escaped, Seuzeneau said. The girl, who was on her way to a tutoring session at a local high school, contacted her mom, who then contacted police.

Slidell Police collected surveillance video from the area, Seuzeneau said, and with the teen's assistance developed a composite sketch of the man. He was described as an older man with grey hair, a grey moustache and a grey beard, and was driving an older-model white Toyota Camry, Seuzeneau said.

Early Monday, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputies were notified of a suspicious vehicle in the same area where the attempted kidnapping occurred, Seuzeneau said. Slidell Police were contacted, and responding officers identified the vehicle and the driver as the man who attempted to kidnap the teen on Saturday.

Slidell Police are still investigating whether Thompson may be involved in other crimes, but at this time it appears to be an isolated incident and a crime of opportunity, Seuzeneau said.
